Barry Ferguson could help Steven Gerrard land Rangers return after what he said

Steven Gerrard has emerged as a prime target to become the next Rangers manager.

Rangers could bring Gerrard back to Govan in the coming days or weeks as they continue their search for a new head coach.

Russell Martin was unsurprisingly sacked by Rangers after what was a dreadful spell since coming in at Ibrox over the summer.

Sean Dyche has also been linked with a Rangers move, but it looks as if Gerrard is the favourite at this stage of the recruitment process.

The former Light Blues boss could be set for a boost as previous quotes from Govan favourite Barry Ferguson have emerged.

Barry Ferguson has respect for Steven Gerrard

Ferguson was shortlisted to become Rangers manager on a full-time basis after he came in temporarily last campaign.

Andrew Cavenagh, Paraag Marathe and Co. instead went for Martin in a decision that now appears to be a massive error.

The former midfielder hasn’t been raised as an option for the currently vacant role, but has made comments about Gerrard in the past.

It appears that the ex-England international is the top head coach target, with Ferguson’s prior remarks potentially helping him secure the role.

Speaking back in November 2021 on the Go Radio Football Show Podcast, the Scot shared his appreciation for Gerrard even after his controversial exit to Aston Villa.

He said: “I think Steven Gerrard has left Rangers in a good place.

They are four points clear, they are still in a semi-final and they have still got a chance of staying in Europe and for me, there is a real good squad with real good players and so it’s a great opportunity for a new Rangers manager to come in and go on and hopefully try and retain that trophy and at the end or middle of May, £40m, which could wipe out all the debt.”

Gerrard could return to Rangers after Ferguson approval

There was a generally bad feeling surrounding the 45-year-old when he cut his time in Govan short to join a faltering Villa side.

Things never went well for him in the West Midlands, and didn’t improve in Saudi Arabia when he moved to Al-Ettifaq.

Steven Gerrard has struggled in his last two managerial roles

The Englishman has now been out of work since January and may have had enough time away from football to be ready for a return.

The Ibrox board could see his prior endorsement from Ferguson and see it as the perfect time to bring in a familiar face to head up their project.
