Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe meeting scheduled as Rangers contender arrives in London
Steven Gerrard is reportedly on his way to London to hold talks over a second spell as the Rangers manager.
Rangers sacked Russell Martin on Sunday after a horrific run of form in the Scottish Premiership and in Europe.
Martin had overseen just one league win in seven games and had seen his side crash out of the Champions League, only to drop into the Europa League and lose both of their opening matches in that competition.
Rangers owners Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe could have acted sooner to get rid of Martin, who was finally sent packing after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Falkirk.

Steven Gerrard heads to London for Rangers talks
Gerrard left Ibrox in 2021 after three semi-successful years in Glasgow.
The Liverpool legend won just one piece of silverware in his time at Rangers. However, the 45-year-old remains the only man to lead the Gers to a league title since Walter Smith, when they went unbeaten in the 2020-21 season.
Gerrard is now reportedly closing in on a sensational return with Sky Sports News journalist Antony Joseph reporting that he’s due in London on Wednesday night for talks with chairman Cavenagh and vice-chairman Marathe.
It is understood that Rangers’ two American owners are now leading the search for Martin’s successor and are due to hold discussions with Gerrard “over the next couple of days”.
What happened when Steven Gerrard left Rangers in 2021 for Aston Villa?
It wasn’t exactly a shock when a Premier League club came knocking for Gerrard four years ago.
Gerrard had just won Rangers’ first league title since their return to the top flight and did so without suffering a single defeat.
Gerrard’s Rangers record | |
Games in charge | 192 |
Wins | 124 |
Draws | 41 |
Losses | 27 |
Goals scored | 407 |
Goals conceded | 139 |
Titles | 1 (Scottish Premiership 2020-21) |
Personal honours | SFWA Manager of the Year, PFA Scotland Manager of the Year, SPFL Premiership Manager of the Year, LMA Special Achievement Award (all 2020-21) |
Sure, Celtic were atrocious at the time, but Gerrard won the Scottish Premiership title emphatically.
Aston Villa then needed a new boss to replace Dean Smith and, naturally, a big-name manager like Stevie G was bound to emerge on the radar of their billionaire owners.
Jim White hit out at Rangers fans for claiming that Gerrard used them in order to get a big Premier League job like he did with Aston Villa.
In the meltdown over his exit, some Rangers fans even said they wanted Michael Beale to replace Gerrard – yikes.
