Steven Gerrard has just given his Rangers appointment answer to Rio Ferdinand

Steven Gerrard did not take long to emerge as the frontrunner to succeed Russell Martin as Rangers’ next manager.

Andrew Cavenagh finally sacked Martin on Sunday on the back of Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Falkirk, but the writing had been on the wall long before that result.

Gerrard is one of a number of names touted with the Rangers job, along with the likes of Sean Dyche, Mark van Bommel and Danny Rohl.

Former England international Gerrard won the title with Rangers in the past, of course, and remains a popular option even if he did leave to join Aston Villa in the past.

Steven Gerrard ready for management return amid Rangers links

Rio Ferdinand teased an interview with Gerrard early on Tuesday, and now that interview has officially aired.

Gerrard was asked about a number of different topics, a return to management being one of them.

And while the Englishman was not asked directly about the Rangers job, he did make clear he is now ready to return to management, which was not the case in the summer.

“I’ve had five or six really interesting phone calls since I stopped in Saudi. And I haven’t been ready because I haven’t got that team set around me,” Gerrard said.

And the timing hasn’t been right. My daughter’s just had a baby. I’ve just become a granddad. I wasn’t ready. I haven’t got my staff ready.

“So unfortunately, them opportunities or them phone calls have come at the wrong time, if you like.

But if the right call comes my way, the right club, the right challenge, and I’ve got my people set, which I will have at some point, I’ll take that challenge on because it’s in me. It’s in me.”

Rangers door open for Gerrard return

Gerrard went on to admit he’s had a bad time of things in his past two jobs, and said he thinks certain clubs are simply better suited to his style.

That is another massive hint he would be open to the opportunity of taking charge of Rangers once again.

Gerrard’s name is already written in Rangers folklore thanks to his title-winning triumph in 2021. Not since then have the Gers tasted the same success.

Gerrard’s record as Rangers manager

Some may have felt Gerrard turned his back at Rangers by taking on the Aston Villa job, but it is clear he is well bedded to the Gers.

If it is a choice between the list of names widely circulating, then Gerrard simply has to be the man Cavenagh goes for.
