Steven Gerrard ally refuses to rule out ‘wonderful’ Ibrox return as Rangers manager search gathers pace

Steven Gerrard is being heavily linked with an eye-catching return to Rangers in the aftermath of Russell Martin’s dismissal.

The 45-year-old delivered the Gers’ solitary Premiership title in the last 15 years back in the 2020-21 campaign, and is being tipped to return following Sunday’s sacking.

Rangers finally pulled the trigger on Martin after a 1-1 draw at Falkirk this weekend, as his ill-fated spell in the Ibrox dugout was mercifully brought to a close.

The former Southampton boss was subject to vitriol from the supporters, but a return for their title-winning boss would certainly bring the positivity back in Govan.

Gary McAllister open to Rangers return with Steven Gerrard

Slaven Bilic is the latest man linked with Rangers, as their search for a new boss is quickly gathering pace.

Rob Edwards is another name that has emerged into the frame on Tuesday, while the quartet of Sean Dyche, Kevin Muscat, Danny Rohl and Gerrard have also been put forward as potential candidates.

Gerrard has already proven his managerial ability at Ibrox, having overseen an unbeaten Premiership season in 2020-21, before jumping ship to join Aston Villa.

Former Liverpool and Leeds United hero Gary McAllister was his right-hand man during his time north of the border, and he also followed him to Villa Park in the next step of his managerial journey.

The ex-Scotland international has now hinted that he would be open to rejoining Rangers alongside Gerrard, while refusing to rule out a potential return.

“We had a wonderful time there,” the 60-year-old said on Sky Sports News.

“We really enjoyed our time there, and Steven did an amazing job getting that 55th title. There have been three or four managerial changes since we left, and he’s always going to be linked with Rangers.

“He’s obviously been out of the game for about six or seven months now, so you never know what can happen.”

McAllister was then asked whether he would consider returning to his old post alongside Gerrard, to which he replied: “It’s a big question that. You never say never, do you?”

The Gers should not go back to Steven Gerrard

Jermain Defoe would also be open to a Rangers return, meaning that in theory, Gerrard would be able to immediately reconstruct the key parts of his old coaching team if he was handed the reins once again.

However, the reality of the current situation is that the Gers shouldn’t be looking to go back to somebody who turned his back on them once before.

The Liverpudlian was held in the highest possible regard after he ended Celtic’s dominance of the Premiership, but he still chose to jump ship for the Premier League, instead of continuing to build a legacy at Ibrox.

Throw in the fact that he has been unsuccessful in his two jobs after leaving Rangers, and he is perhaps not the attractive option that he is being made out to be by many.

The hierarchy have to think with their heads and not their hearts, and for that reason, it is best if they stay clear of Gerrard.
