Iona Fyfe hits out at controversial MSP over Russell Martin post after Rangers sack

Russell Martin’s departure from Rangers has certainly got plenty of people talking.

Martin was sacked by Rangers on Sunday after 17 games at the Scottish club.

His final game was Rangers’ 1-1 draw to Falkirk, where the Gers delivered yet another uninspiring performance.

The vast majority of Gers fans were pleased to see him go, having strongly criticised the direction he was taking the Glasgow club in.

But his dismissal has provoked strong feelings from that venture into conversations greater than football.

Iona Fyfe hits out at MSP Murdo Fraser for Russell Martin sack post

The Gers are studying several options to replace Martin, including former Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard, who could make his long-anticipated Rangers return.

Fans and other interested parties have spent the last couple of days theorising and throwing names into the ring to take over. However, not all suggestions have been looked at favourably.

Murdo Fraser, a Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife, who is a Rangers fan, took to X on 5 October with a controversial request.

He said: “No more vegans, Bhuddists or Green Party members please,” while tagging the club in the posts.

Martin has been vegan since 2014, follows Buddhist teachings and is a Green Party member.

The post sparked outrage among users, including Scottish folk singer Iona Fyfe, who responded: “Can’t even spell Buddhist correctly,” underneath the post.

Fraser has since been reported to the police by a member of the public for his comment, according to The National on 7 October.

Russell Martin sack was only option at Rangers

Martin needed a police escort to escape the taunts of Gers fans during Rangers’ draw to Falkirk just hours before he was sacked.

The now-former Ibrox coach had won just one in seven in the Scottish Premiership, with a Rangers side which clearly lacked identity and direction.

While his attacking record was poor, Martin’s defensive record at Rangers was no better. In fact, his tactical displays were a disappointment from beginning to end.

It is never easy coaching a big side where expectations are high. However, after losing the backing of the fans and management, any attempt to revive his managerial career at Ibrox would have been futile.

Therefore, even though it was a short stay, it was the right time for Martin to leave.
