Frank Lampard to ‘leave Coventry City in a heartbeat’ amid new Rangers appointment suggestion

Rangers’ search for a new manager is set to enter a third full day on Wednesday as they seek Russell Martin’s replacement.

Steven Gerrard remains the firm favourite to take over at Ibrox, but plenty of other names have been mentioned.

While Sean Dyche appears to be out of the running to become next Rangers boss, the likes of Kevin Muscat, Danny Rohl and Slaven Bilic have also been mentioned.

But more names continue to be thrown into the frame, the most recent being Coventry City manager Frank Lampard.

Ross McCormack would have Frank Lampard as next Rangers manager

Rangers have a bit of time to play with before their return to club action, but that is not to say this search can drag out for too long.

Martin was sacked by Rangers on Sunday to the surprise of nobody, with Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe under pressure to get the next appointment spot on.

And while Lampard’s name has not been mentioned by many, he is the man Ross McCormack would have in the Ibrox dugout given the choice.

Speaking on the Open Goal podcast on Tuesday, McCormack said: “If you could get one, for me it would be Lampard, having seen what he’s like.

Lampard is currently enjoying life at Coventry, with the Sky Blues sitting top of the English Championship table.

However, McCormack added: “I think you leave Coventry in a heartbeat to go to Rangers.”

Frank Lampard’s managerial record

While nothing bad can be said about Lampard’s impressive playing career, his managerial career to date has been topsy-turvy to say the least.

Lampard enjoyed relative success as Derby County boss, before a mixed time of things in a couple of Chelsea spells either side of his stint with Everton, which was not great.

Many felt Lampard was not cut out for management, but he has been superb as Coventry boss and has them on course for a return to the Premier League.

On that basis, he would indeed be a great choice as Rangers boss. However, if it is a choice between Lampard and Gerrard, then it is clear who the majority of Gers fans would favour.

And given Gerrard is seemingly open to a Rangers return, it makes sense to go with him over the two.
