Conor Coady takes aim at Andrew Cavenagh after what he’s noticed at Rangers

Russell Martin’s sacking has heaped pressure on Andrew Cavenagh to find a successful manager.

Martin’s sacking was always on the cards following Rangers’ dreadful start to the season on both domestic and European fronts.

Sean Dyche initially emerged as the potential frontrunner to fill the managerial vacancy, but now Chris Jack suggested Rangers won’t hire Dyche.

Wrexham defender Conor Coady was linked with Rangers in the summer transfer window, and the 32-year-old defender took aim at Cavenagh over what he perceives to be his biggest mistake.

Andrew Cavenagh hasn’t grasped what Rangers is all about

Rangers have a wealth of history that is unparalleled by most other teams in the world, and fans demand trophies every single season.

Despite being close to joining the Bears in the summer, Coady now plays for Wrexham in the Championship.

Coady spoke on the Monday Night Club on 6 October about how Cavenagh hasn’t understood what Rangers fans demand.

He said: “You don’t have time to build. I don’t think the ownership group, the manager, or the players that have been brought in have realised how big Rangers is.

“Rangers need success every single time they play and they need a manager that instantly wins.

“The owners have felt that they can build and improve but Rangers need to win now.”

Major honours Rangers have won:

Ibrox has seen many Rangers teams historically dominate in Scotland, but Cavenagh, Kevin Thelwell and the rest of the Rangers hierarchy have yet to fully grasp the requirements of the Ibrox faithful.

Michael Beale was sacked by the Light Blues in October 2023, despite having a win percentage of 72 per cent.

Martin’s win percentage at Rangers was 29.41 per cent, and it goes to show that quick-fire success is the bare minimum for a manager taking the reins in Govan.

It was clear from the jump that Martin’s CV did not match up with the demands that are placed on the Rangers manager, and Cavenagh will need to hire someone who has credible pedigree when dealing with pressure.

Cavenagh must get next appointment right

If Cavenagh and the other important figures in the Rangers hierarchy felt there would be a grace period after a summer of transition, then they will quick realise that is not the case.

A line needs to be drawn under the Martin saga. It was a hire that was not popular from the outset and an abysmal 123-day stint means there is simply now no room for error.

Whoever comes in next has to get the most out of players who Rangers paid big money for in the summer, and right now that feels no easy task.

But Cavenagh will be under no illusions now that there is zero room for error. Every decision that is made in the next few weeks will be highly scrutinised.

The intentions so far may have been good, but the execution has simply not been right. Now, it just has to be otherwise the unforgiving Rangers fans will soon lose faith.
