Steven Gerrard return to Rangers green-lit after Russell Martin sack

Steven Gerrard could potentially be the saviour Rangers need right now after sacking Russell Martin.

The Scottish manager became the shortest-serving permanent manager at the Gers, lasting just 123 days in the dugout.

With the 39-year-old head coach’s dismissal feeling inevitable for a long time, the 1-1 draw against Falkirk in the William Hill Premiership was the final straw for the Light Blues’ hierarchy.

Andrew Cavenagh should undoubtedly get on a phone call with Gerrard to discuss the direction the Glaswegian outfit want to take, with the American owners now arguably under pressure to make the right call.

Steven Gerrard has unfinished business at Rangers

Gerrard may be able to salvage the season at the Gers after a disappointing start under Martin, Dave King says.

The Light Blues’ former chairman believes the Liverpool icon was on course to win the 56th league title at Ibrox before leaving for Aston Villa.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Englishman return to the Glaswegian outfit after struggling in Birmingham and Al-Ettifaq.

Speaking to STV on 6 October, King said: “I would love to see Steven back at the club. Steven is a winner and will get more out of the squad than we have witnessed so far. I believe he has unfinished business after being forced out by Douglas Park when he was on track to win 56.

“I think he can get more out of the present squad reasonably quickly and get back to winning ways. [Winning the league] is unlikely this season, but not impossible if he gets going now.”

Gerrard feels like the obvious candidate at Ibrox, considering he was the last manager to lift the league title in 2021, stopping Celtic from winning 10 in a row.

With the international break giving the decision-makers in G51 time to assess their options, it remains to be seen what direction they will take.

Russell Martin ends disastrous spell at Ibrox

Apart from leaving the Gers eighth in the William Hill Premiership, Martin’s failures have seen Europa League prospects at Ibrox take a hit.

Rangers will have the opportunity to reach the Premier Sports Cup semi-final at the end of October, but they need to get past Celtic first, which would’ve arguably been unlikely under the Scottish manager.

Gerrard’s record as the Gers manager

If the US consortium make the right appointment, the mood around the stadium would certainly improve, and making a push for the league title wouldn’t be out of the question considering Celtic’s own struggles this season.

While Gerrard has a mixed legacy at the Gers after leaving midway through the season to join Villa, he should be Cavenagh and the 49ers’ priority.
