Steven Gerrard dream return already off the table as Rangers new manager blow emerges

Steven Gerrard has catapulted into the running to return to Rangers following the sacking of Russell Martin on Sunday.

Martin was finally sacked at Ibrox following yet another disappointing 1-1 draw at Falkirk on 5 October.

Rangers somehow sit eighth in the Scottish Premiership, having won just one of their opening seven league matches after a major summer spend.

Gerrard is one of the favourites to have a second spell at Rangers, yet doubt has already been cast around whether he wants to return to Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard return unlikely after rejecting them in July

Gerrard was a huge success at Rangers, guiding them to the Scottish Premiership title in 2020-21.

Despite some underperformances in the domestic cup competitions, the former Liverpool midfielder instilled a strong mentality within the dressing room, whilst holding himself accountable to the media.

Gerrard was linked with a Rangers return in the summer, and with Martin being eventually given the job, it begs the question as to why he would change his mind now.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 6 October, chief football correspondent Alex Crook has shed light on Gerrard’s stance on a potential Ibrox return.

He said: “The hierarchy has to take a little bit of responsibility for what we saw because the atmosphere was turning toxic for quite some time.

“I felt sorry for Martin for the abuse he was suffering by the end.

“The whole recruitment process of appointing a manager was a mess. At one stage, they were all in on Steen Gerrard, but he didn’t fancy it.”

Whilst there are many managers who have a higher win percentage, Gerrard endeared himself to Gers fans, and it sadly looks like they’ll be let down yet again.

Despite being without a job, it makes no sense for Gerrard to join Rangers now when he had the opportunity to do so at the start of the season.

If Gerrard were to come in now, he would have a much harder job on his hands, given the fact that the team is low on confidence, and he would have to completely reassemble the squad.

Whether Gerrard returns or not, it’s clear that Andrew Cavenagh must get this next decision absolutely spot on.

Andrew Cavenagh must get next managerial appointment right

Martin’s downfall came as a result of many things, yet the way Rangers continued to look vulnerable against every wave of attack is something that must be addressed.

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is one of the favourites to take over in Govan, as the 36-year-old remains unemployed following his stint in the Steel City.

Sean Dyche has been linked with the Rangers vacancy, with his pragmatic style of football being something that the team could benefit from at this moment in time.

Dyche has previously worked with Kevin Thelwell at Everton, and could endear himself to Gers fans with his tough mentality.

Cavenagh needs to find a new replacement fast, and whoever that may be, they must fix the mess that Martin has left at Ibrox.

Rangers fans may need to realise quickly that it won’t be Gerrard, though.
