Rangers must break down crucial barrier to seal Danny Rohl appointment as Ibrox admirers remain

Rangers finally reached the end of their tether with Russell Martin after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Falkirk.

The 39-year-old’s reign was disastrous from start to finish, and the Gers fans quickly turned against him and piled the pressure on the board.

Rangers only confirmed Martin’s dismissal on Sunday evening, but there are already several names who are being tipped to potentially take the reins in Govan in the coming weeks.

The likes of Sean Dyche, Mark van Bommel and Steven Gerrard have all been mentioned, but there is surely one candidate who would stand out as a particularly strong appointment.

Rangers must convince Danny Rohl to drop Bundesliga ambitions

Danny Rohl was heavily linked with the Rangers job before Martin was handed the keys earlier in the summer, and he could be an option once again this time around.

Journalist Ben Jacobs posted on his X account on Sunday evening that both the German and Gerrard “remain appreciated’ by key figures within the hierarchy at Ibrox.

That suggests that he would still be viewed as an attractive candidate to take over the Gers, and he is now out of work, having left crisis-stricken Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent at the end of July.

However, while the 36-year-old may still have admirers in the boardroom in Govan, there is a crucial barrier to break down if they want to appoint the former assistant of the Germany national team, and that is his desire to work in the Bundesliga.

The former RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich coach expressed his desire to manage in top flight in his homeland during an interview with BILD back in June.

“If it’s up to me, as soon as possible,” Rohl said when asked about when he would be a Bundesliga manager.

“The Bundesliga is of course something special, because I grew up with it. For me, it’s always about working at the highest level. I want to compete with the best teams, with the best coaches.”

The Gers have to do everything they can to land Danny Rohl

Rohl looked like an attractive candidate for Rangers in the summer, and with him now available without them having to pay compensation, it is surely a no-brainer for them to try and make a move for him.

Of the names mentioned so far, he is by far the most exciting possibility, given what he achieved with Sheffield Wednesday throughout their struggles.

He steered the Owls away from the Championship relegation zone during his first season in charge, before leading them to a 12th-placed finish last term, despite receiving next to no backing from above.

Rohl is a coach who is destined to eventually manage at the top level, and he would be the ideal man for the Gers faithful to rally behind after the division of Martin’s reign.

He may have his heart set on the Bundesliga, but if Andrew Cavenagh and Co. could use the fact that they wouldn’t have to pay compensation to another club to get him, and add that on to his potential wages, it could easily be enough to tempt him and break down that barrier.
