Rangers may already have secret weapon to appoint new manager after Russell Martin sack
Rangers finally put Russell Martin out of his misery at Ibrox on Sunday.
Martin was sacked by Rangers after 123 days following a dismal 1-1 draw at Falkirk, which encapsulated an abysmal tenure in Govan.
The former Southampton boss won just five of his 17 games in charge and Martin was subject to protests from Rangers supporters amid frustrations over lacklustre performances and a possession-based style that many just felt did not suit the players at his disposal.
The offset is that Rangers are once more on the lookout for a new manager and a couple of familiar names have already been linked as Martin‘s replacement.

Steven Gerrard and Danny Rohl on Rangers radar again
Steven Gerrard has once again been mooted as an option at Rangers, with the former England international of course leading the Light Blues to their last Scottish Premiership title in the 2020-21 campaign.
But Ben Jacobs posted on X to confirm that former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who was linked with Rangers in the summer, is also still on the club’s radar.
He posted: “Understand Rangers manager Russell Martin is on the brink of being sacked following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Falkirk. The Rangers board are expected to make an imminent decision. Steven Gerrard and Danny Rohl both remain appreciated by senior figures at the club and were on the shortlist before Martin took charge.”
Should Rangers opt to look at the German, a former Bayern Munich and Germany assistant who earned plaudits for pulling of a miracle escape from relegation at Hillsborough in the 2023-24 campaign, then Rangers may already have a secret weapon in their backroom team.
Rangers backroom figure can get in Danny Rohl’s ear
Back in July, Rangers announced the appointment of goalkeeping coach Sal Bibbo, who has had held roles with the likes of Arsenal, Brighton, and – most recently before the Gers – Sheffield Wednesday.
Bibbo has already worked at close quarters with Rohl, who had a large backroom team at S6, and could be someone who could not get in the ear of senior figures at Ibrox but could sell the Ibrox dream to a manager with high potential.
- Rangers won just five of 17 competitive games under Russell Martin.
- Danny Rohl left Sheffield Wednesday in the summer.
- The German had a 38.2 per cent win percentage at Hillsborough.
There is an obvious link to be made with Rohl, who is a coach who has previously worked in the Red Bull system. Red Bull of course are Rangers’ front-of-shirt sponsor and also have a relationship with 49ers Enterprises at Leeds United.
So, if Rohl is an option they wish to pursue then perhaps they may look to Bibbo to have a word in the ear of the 36-year-old – who was assistant to Hansi Flick at Bayern when they won the Champions League in 2020.
