Michael Beale could derail Steven Gerrard’s sensational return to Rangers
The 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh will sit down and decide on a new Rangers head coach in the coming weeks.
Links to the job have been flying all over since Russell Martin’s sacking on Sunday evening.
Derek McInnes is being linked with the Rangers job, as Mark van Bommel has also shown interest in coming to Ibrox.
A strong early favourite for the Rangers role is Steven Gerrard, as Gers fans are already fantasising over the former head coach’s return.
However, one obstacle stands in the way of a sensational Gerrard return, and that is Michael Beale.

Steven Gerrard would need former Rangers head coach Michael Beale alongside him at Ibrox
Gerrard has so far managed Rangers, Aston Villa, and most recently, Al-Ettifaq. During his time at all three clubs, there has always been a point where Beale has worked alongside him as an assistant coach.
Rangers fans are not fond of Beale, and it would be surprising if the former Rangers head coach would take up the chance to return to a place in Ibrox where he isn’t exactly welcome.
- Beale was appointed Rangers head coach in 2022
- He won his first four matches in charge of the Gers
- He was sacked at the start of October 2023 after three defeats in seven opening league games
Gerrard got off to a good start at Villa before Beale left to pursue his head coach dream, and soon after, the wheels started to fall off at Villa Park, and Gerrard was later sacked.
Rangers fans might not like to hear it, but Gerrard hasn’t been successful without the help of Beale.

Though Rangers fans would take Gerrard back in a heartbeat, it may not be a sensible move considering the likelihood of Beale not returning to Ibrox.
Rangers should stay clear of appointing Gerrard
Rangers need someone they know they can grow under, as instant success isn’t going to happen for whoever takes over.
The Gers need fresh ideas and a fresh face at the club. If Gerrard were to get off to a bad start, it would only harm the relationship between him and the club, as now is not the right time for him to make his return.
As Rangers fans’ frustration continues to grow with the board, Cavenagh and the 49ers need to make this next decision count.
