Mark van Bommel truth emerges as Andrew Cavenagh seeks Rangers fix

Russell Martin’s sacking at Rangers has left Andrew Cavenagh with a giant task.

The former Southampton manager was awful at the Gers, with his short reign essentially ending any title hopes in October.

After such a catastrophic start to the season, the pressure is on Cavenagh and the rest of Rangers to ensure the next appointment is the right one.

Multiple managers have already been linked to the role, including Steven Gerrard and Mark van Bommel, with speculation regarding the latter coach continuing to grow at Rangers.

Mark van Bommel not set for Rangers move

Van Bommel is not doubt a highly regarded manager in Europe.

Recently, the former Netherlands international was at the helm at Royal Antwerp, guiding the side to the Belgian Pro League in 2023.

However, since leaving the club in 2024, he has remained a free agent.

Now, after Martin’s sacking, it was reported that van Bommel was interested in the Rangers job.

This comes after Cavenagh released a statement to Rangers supporters on 6 October, explaining they are looking to “fix” the current situation at the Glaswegians.

However, it has now been reported by SoccerNews on 6 October that van Bommel is not interested in the vacancy at Ibrox, and there is currently nothing going on between the two parties.

Steven Gerrard remains the best candidate for Rangers

As it stands, Gerrard is likely the best candidate for Rangers.

The Liverpool legend knows the club and will be able to get the fans back on side.

On top of this, given his previous success at the Gers, he may be able to turn this season into a successful campaign, especially if he comes away with a trophy.

Therefore, while Gerrard reportedly isn’t a fan of the current Rangers squad, Cavenagh must do everything in his power to bring the manager back to Ibrox.
