Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart may have also just committed ‘sackable offence’ behind backs at Rangers

Rangers finally made the long-awaited decision to sack Russell Martin after yet another draw on Sunday.

Despite Bojan Miovski‘s first-half goal, Rangers drew 1-1 with Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership to make it just one win from seven league games on 5 October.

The newly-promoted home side, despite sitting two points below Martin‘s side, enjoyed the majority of the chances and were rewarded when Henry Cartwright’s deflected strike found the net.

Mikey Moore was among those to be criticised for their performance against Falkirk, after the winger was caught offside on several occasions.

In a statement following the match, Rangers confirmed that Martin had been relieved of his duties, bringing his shambolic 123-day tenure to an end.

Decision to hire Robbie Thelwell ‘sackable’

Rangers hired Robbie Thelwell, Kevin’s son, as their head of recruitment last week, in what has been described as a bizarre move.

The 26-year-old has worked at Wolves and Aston Villa, most recently performing the role of head of technical scouting and loan management at Norwich City.

But with his father already under intense pressure, having overseen the appointment of Martin, the move was received with outrage.

Rangers took far too long to end the experiment that saw the former Southampton boss arrive at Ibrox, despite it becoming clear weeks ago that it was not working.

Writing in the Daily Record on Monday, Keith Jackson lambasted both Thelwell and CEO Patrick Stewart.

“When he first proposed his own son as the best qualified candidate for the job of head of recruitment at Rangers, he should probably have been escorted directly off the premises even then,” the journalist wrote.

“Patrick Stewart would have been doing Thelwell a duty of care by advising him to step away from his position before he commits the club to any further dimwittery.

“That Stewart must surely have agreed to rubber-stamp the appointment of young Robbie is a damning indictment on the CEO, too.”

Jackson also suggested that if Chairman Andrew Cavanagh had not green-lighted the appointment, “then it would surely constitute a sackable offence all by itself,” behind his back.

Kevin Thelwell on thin ice at Rangers

Thelwell will likely never be able to shake the disastrous saga that has surrounded Rangers since his arrival at Ibrox.

The sporting director was directly involved in the decision that saw Martin named as the Gers manager, and his hand is marred with the time it took to show the Englishman the door.

His next decision will be to name Rangers’ next manager, and his job security will depend on its success or failure.

After a net spend of around £20million in the summer too, he is running out of favours quickly.
