Four managers named who could take charge at Rangers live on Sky Sports after Russell Martin exit

Russell Martin lasted just 123 days in charge of Rangers.

Martin was under pressure for weeks, and Andrew Cavenagh had no choice but to swallow his pride and relieve the 39-year-old of his duties on 5 October.

During the international break, Cavenagh will need to quickly select and appoint a new head coach before their match against Dundee United on 18 October.

Managers around the world are being linked with the Rangers job already, yet four options have been touted as the ideal candidates for the role.

Kris Boyd names four managers who Rangers should look at

Martin led Rangers to their worst league start after six matches in 47 years, and the Bears’ disastrous Champions League play-off elimination is where things really started to go wrong.

Steven Gerrard is currently the favourite for the Rangers job, and should he return for his second spell in charge, fans will undoubtedly be excited.

Kris Boyd was asked by Sky Sports Scotland on 6 October outside Ibrox who Cavenagh should be looking at to lead the Light Blues forward, coming up with four options.

He said: “The obvious name is Gerrard, and Sean Dyche is one who has previously worked with Kevin Thelwell.

Kevin Muscat is another one, or do Rangers go for Hearts’ Derek McInnes? Hearts have had a fantastic start. It didn’t happen before, but the impact he has had there since moving from Kilmarnock might be something that interests Rangers.

Whomever takes over the Bears from this point forward has an almighty task ahead of them, given where Martin has left the team.

Confidence in the Rangers squad is extremely low, and whoever comes in will have to get the attacking players to start firing.

Gerrard had the chance to return to Ibrox in the summer, and coming back now would make no real sense given the opportunities he could have had in the transfer window to build his own squad.

Gerrard’s Scottish Premiership title win at Rangers 2020-21 is the last time the Bears won the league, and in the event he is hired by Cavenagh, fans would welcome him back with open arms.

Whilst Muscat and McInnes are unlikely to leave their current jobs at this moment, Dyche could be one to keep an eye on.

Sean Dyche could be a great appointment for Rangers

The former Everton and Burnley manager is associated with a pragmatic style of football that focuses on defending deep and hitting teams on the counter-attack.

For this group of players that have looked so defensively weak under Martin, that might not be such a bad thing.

Dyche is being linked with the Rangers job to use his experience working with Thelwell at Everton.

Rangers looked best in recent matches when they were going direct and chasing a late goal rather than in possession, where play was slow and lethargic.

The 54-year-old guided Burnley to a seventh-placed Premier League finish in 2018, and consistently overachieved during his spell for the Clarets.

Dyche may not be the most attractive managerial appointment, but he would get this team working harder than it ever has.
