Emmanuel Petit blasts Rangers fans after ‘ridiculous’ Russell Martin scenes

Rangers fans may have crossed the line with the scenes following Russell Martin’s final game in charge.

Rangers were held to a 1-1 draw by Falkirk, and Martin was handed his marching orders after that disappointing result.

He was in charge for just 17 matches, winning just one of his seven Scottish Premiership games, with the Gers sitting 11 points off the top spot.

Martin has been the subject of abuse from Rangers supporters, with many not wanting him to be appointed in the first place.

Emmanuel Petit speaks out as Russell Martin tensions boil over at Rangers

Rangers fans have been furious with Martin’s reign in charge, and tension boiled over after the Falkirk game.

Martin had to be given a police escort out of the stadium as angry fans waited to confront the beleaguered manager and blocked the team bus from departing.

The former Premier League star, who starred with Arsenal and Chelsea, has hit out at the Gers supporters involved after the shocking post-match scenes.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 6 October (10:25 am), he said: “It is ridiculous, maybe I am not that intelligent to understand this situation, I think people are taking that too emotionally, this is only football, you know.”

Jim White, Simon Jordan and Petit discussed the situation live on air.

Rangers fans should not take the blame for Martin’s arrogance

From the moment that Martin walked in, it felt as though, he thought that he was bigger than the club and underappreciated the size of the task in hand.

That approach will never work, especially in Glasgow, and he was never going to turn supporters onside as a result.

His arrogance did not help his cause, and it has ultimately led to his downfall in Govan, perhaps sooner than some expected, but maybe later than some others had predicted.

Football fans are emotional, they love their club, and for many, the results make or break their whole week, so to call them ridiculous for expressing their opinion is not right.

Some may have taken it too far, with intimidating tactics, but they wanted Martin out, and they have now been granted their wish, so they will be satisfied.

The 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh face a huge task to get the supporters back on board, but now that Martin has gone, there can be a full refresh.
