Darren Bent’s Rangers reveal stuns talkSPORT host, it’s just a shame it’s completely wrong
Rangers remain a hot topic of debate as they begin their search for Russell Martin’s successor at Ibrox.
Martin’s sacking was confirmed by Rangers on Sunday, seeing his reign come to an end before it had ever truly begun.
Richard Keys has already slammed Kevin Thelwell over the appointment, while Jake Humphrey has been made to look silly over something he said about Martin.
And now Darren Bent has given his two cents on the situation at Rangers, leaving co-host Andy Goldstein surprised by something he said.

Darren Bent gets it wrong over Rangers league finishes stat
Rangers’ 1-1 draw at Falkirk on Sunday proved the final straw for Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe as they pulled the trigger on Martin.
In many ways, they were doing Martin good as the former Southampton manager had been put through enough.
Martin leaves Rangers sitting eighth in the Scottish Premiership table, 11 points behind surprise leaders Hearts.
Celtic, not that fans need reminding, are nine points better off with only seven games of the campaign played.
With Rangers on course to finish outside the top two, Bent read out a stat he had found online regarding the Gers’ league finishes.
“I’ve been looking at their finishing positions. The last time they finished outside the top two was 2017-18 when they were third, and then third a couple of seasons before that,” Bent said on talkSPORT drive on Monday.
“I’ve gone all the way back to 1967 and they haven’t finished below third.“
That reveal left Goldstein visibly surprised as he replied: “Wow”.
However, Rangers fans will be fully aware that, while finishing outside the top three in the Scottish Premiership is indeed extremely rare, they spent a period outside the top flight not so long ago.
Indeed, finishing first in the Third Division in 2012-13 was technically the lowest finish for the Gers in that period.

What is Rangers’ lowest finish in past decade?
Since returning to where they belong in 2016-17, Rangers have finished third a couple of times, second on six occasions and first once.
The last time Rangers finished as low as third was in 2017-18.
Season | Points | Position |
2024-25 | 75 | 2nd |
2023-24 | 85 | 2nd |
2022-23 | 93 | 2nd |
2021-22 | 89 | 2nd |
Even if the new manager in charge turns things around quickly, finishing third for the first time in eight years is a real possibility.
Making up the gap on the likes of Kilmarnock, Dundee United and St Mirren is one thing, to name a few, but Hearts look a real force and Celtic will likely come good eventually.
While Bent may have been wrong with his information, it is indeed true that finishing anywhere outside the elite is extremely rare for the Gers when in the top flight.
