Andrew Cavenagh to regret Rangers appointment as Kevin Thelwell concerns emerge

Andrew Cavenagh finally pulled the plug on Russell Martin after Rangers drew against Falkirk on Sunday.

Martin’s team dropped more points at Falkirk Stadium on 5 October, and the Scottish manager was subsequently relieved of his duties in G51.

The Ibrox faithful have also been calling for Kevin Thelwell’s sacking, with the Light Blues’ sporting director undoubtedly playing a role in the Scottish manager’s appointment.

With the former Everton chief also responsible for the Glaswegian outfit’s failures this season, tough questions must be asked of him.

Rangers to have concerns on Kevin Thelwell judgment after Russell Martin sack

Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson’s reputation may have taken a hit after Martin’s failures at the Gers, Keith Jackson says.

The Daily Record journalist believes Andrew Cavenagh could potentially regret the decision of handing the responsibility of hiring a manager at Ibrox to the pair.

When the US consortium completed their takeover of the Glaswegian outfit, massive changes were promised, but the situation in G51 has arguably only gotten worse since then.

Jackson wrote in the Daily Record on 6 October: “It stands to reason, then, that the judgment of Thelwell and Steinsson must now be a major concern for the club’s owner and self-appointed chairman, Cavenagh.

“Cavenagh delegated the responsibility of recruiting a manager to this pair, and the American must be deeply regretting that decision already.”

Robbie Thelwell’s appointment at Ibrox should also raise concerns about the sporting director at the Light Blues, and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for him.

Kevin Thelwell recruitment underwhelming at Ibrox

Cavenagh should assess Thelwell’s future at Ibrox, given that most of the Gers’ summer signings have failed to live up to expectations.

It could be argued that apart from Djeidi Gassama none of the other 11 players Thelwell brought to Rangers have been good enough in the current campaign.

With Martin going out the door, supporters will still be concerned about the direction the Gers will take under the current management.

The American owners have already failed a few months into their ownership and should take extra care in what they do next.
