Rangers new hire is ‘final straw’ as yet another behind-the-scenes Ibrox arrival is lined up
Andrew Cavenagh’s start to life as Rangers chairman has quickly become disastrous.
Russell Martin’s appointment has gone incredibly badly, with fans staging protests and demanding he be sacked just three months into his managerial reign.
Cavenagh is yet to bite the bullet with Martin, although a loss to Falkirk on Sunday could change his mind with the international break coming up.
Kevin Thelwell has also come under fire for his recruitment strategy, yet developments at Ibrox this week have put him right back in the spotlight.

Kevin Thelwell set to appoint Jim Liggett as chief operating officer
Having already announced the arrival of Robbie Thelwell, his father, Kevin Thelwell, is set to make another addition to the board.
Former Man United director of operations Liggett is set to join Rangers on a temporary basis, where he will reunite with former colleague Patrick Stewart.
In the Scottish Mail on Sunday on 5 October, journalist Gary Keown was critical of the appointments of both Liggett and Robbie Thelwell.
He said: “Kevin Thelwell bringing in his 26-year-old son Robbie as head of recruitment is starting to feel like the final straw.
“Liggett is about to be appointed as chief operating officer on an interim basis, and he was at Manchester United with CEO Patrick Stewart.
“Is this how recruitment should look at a serious club? Former colleagues and People’s kids landing top jobs?”
This marks a string of behind-the-scenes appointments spearheaded by Kevin Thelwell, with the sporting director now facing questions about his job.
New Rangers appointments:
- Nathan Fisher – Head scout
- Robbie Thelwell – Head of recruitment
- Jim Liggett – Chief operating officer
The board have come under severe pressure as Rangers’ form continues to deteriorate, with Kevin Thelwell, Stewart, and Cavenagh all receiving immense criticism from Light Blues fans.
The decision to hire Robbie Thelwell was met with huge backlash, with claims of nepotism being lobbed at the sporting director.

Despite the fact that Martin is still public enemy number one in Govan, Kevin Thelwell’s recent actions are landing him in a wave of scrutiny.
Kevin Thelwell is starting to become as unpopular as Russell Martin
Kevin Thelwell and Stewart were confronted by fans in Austria following the 2-1 loss to Sturm Graz on Thursday.
Rangers fans were furious with some of the transfer fees that were paid for unproven players in the summer transfer window.
Youssef Chermiti was signed for £10million, despite not scoring a goal in senior football for over two years.
Emmanuel Fernandez has also been a huge waste of funds, whilst Oliver Antman and Thelo Aasgard have failed to deliver for the Light Blues so far this season.
Kevin Thelwell didn’t have a good relationship with the supporters prior to this week’s appointments, and Liggett’s arrival marks yet another flaw in his short Rangers tenure.
