‘James Tavernier was out the door’ as Jack Butland exit rumours emerge in latest Rangers revelations

Rangers’ spending spree in the summer transfer window has clearly not worked out.

Russell Martin oversaw a mass overhaul of the squad, with numerous players coming and going.

However, it has become clear in recent weeks that his spending spree has not worked.

Stars such as Mikey Moore have been awful for Rangers, with these players contributing to the Gers’ recent downfall.

In comparison, plenty of players left Ibrox, with rumours now coming out about James Tavernier and Jack Butland.

Kris Boyd: James Tavernier and Jack Butland almost left Rangers in the summer

As signings came through the door at Ibrox, Martin was not afraid to let some of the old guard go.

Stars such as Hamza Igamane, who were sensational in the 2024-25 campaign, departed Rangers to make room for the new boys.

Yet, for those who stayed, they have now managed to work themselves back into the starting XI, with Tavernier being one after he was left out of the team multiple times in August.

Now, Kris Boyd has insisted that the Rangers captain was in fact set to leave the Gers, with rumours suggesting that Butland was set to join him.

In a section of his rant on Sky Sports on 5 October, he said: “Rangers have spent an absolute fortune in the summer, let’s not get away from it.

“They have sold some players, but they have spent an absolute fortune. It is impossible for Rangers to be in the position they are in right now, considering what they have spent.

“You can speak about the turnover of players, but that is because Russell Martin has wanted that.

“James Tavernier was out the door as well, now all of a sudden, he is the first name on the team sheet.

“There were rumours that Jack Butland was going to go.”

Now, with Martin sacked by Rangers, the transfer window no doubt looks awful, with many of his players simply not good enough.

Martin isn’t the only man to blame for Rangers disaster

As bad as Martin was at Ibrox, sacking the manager will not fix every problem at the Glaswegians.

The fact that the former Southampton boss was allowed to bring in so many players who are very clearly not good enough is a massive concern.

Questions need to be asked of Kevin Thelwell, who was not only part of the hiring process for Martin, but also oversaw the recent transfer window.

Whoever comes through the door next, things need to be in place to ensure this does not happen again, or Rangers could find themselves in serious trouble.
