Troy Deeney expects Russell Martin to fully lose Rangers dressing room after what he’s heard

Rangers’ problems appear to go from bad to worse each week as Russell Martin continues to find new lows.

Rangers lost 2-1 to Sturm Graz at the Merkur Arena on 2 October and made it back-to-back defeats in the Europa League.

The abysmal form on the continent has been paired with the Gers’ worst Scottish Premiership start in 47 years, and Martin’s position at Rangers is now untenable.

Rangers fans want Martin out of their club, that is clear, and the players turning on their new manager only feels inevitable.

Troy Deeney raises massive concern

Rangers’ 2-1 win over Livingston in West Lothian, in the last domestic game, was barely a drop in the ocean on Martin’s way to winning those involved with the Bears over.

When speaking on talkSPORT, Troy Deeney couldn’t believe what he’d heard in terms of the vast contrast in messages the Rangers boss has sent out from one game to the next.

Deeney said: “After the Livingston win, [Martin] said ‘we are building something here, the lads kept going to the end’, and now you are questioning their mentality four days later.

“As a player, I start to go, ‘well, which one is it?”

The former Watford striker struggles to see a way back for the Gers and their increasingly disappointing gamble on Martin.

If the ex-Southampton manager continues his way of speaking in the media, it’s only a matter of time before senior figures within the team turn their back on him.

When asked if Martin risks losing the dressing room after questioning the players’ mentality, Deeney said: “I think so. And I don’t think it’s a great team. I don’t think that’s a great Rangers team.

I don’t think there are great players in there that if you offered them out to everybody now, they would all be picked up at a level they probably think they should be.

“Where you are right now, they need to galvanise, get together, and a manager in this position needs to be pulling them all in.

Martin’s tenure has started to hurt the pockets of the club, which could be the big revelation needed to see him dismissed.

Potential Rangers replacements should Russell Martin be sacked

This whole debacle could’ve been avoided if Rangers had hired the right man in the summer.

On October 4, Sean Dyche remains the favourite to take over from the Scottish manager talk of a return for Steven Gerrard persists.

Dyche would sure up the defence and possibly galvanise the squad, but the style of football could soon become tiresome for the Gers supporters.

Gerrard would certainly bring a good feeling back to the club, the memories of spoiling Celtic’s 10-in-a-row will forever live on in fans’ hearts.

Whoever the man eventually chosen is, it’s almost certain to ignite an improvement in some way, shape or form.
