Rangers red flags emerge after extraordinary development, Andrew Cavenagh naive

Rangers have arguably gotten worse since Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises completed their takeover.

Russell Martin’s tenure at Ibrox has been disastrous, with the Gers winning just five of his first 16 matches.

The Scottish manager has to take responsibility for most of the issues at the Light Blues, but the decision-makers in the boardroom have to answer questions.

Cavenagh seems to be backing Martin despite the 2-1 loss to Sturm Graz in the Europa League on 2 October, and it looks like the US consortium are out of their depth in G51.

Andrew Cavenah being taken advantage of after Robbie Thelwell appointment at Rangers

Robbie Thelwell’s potential appointment at the Gers is “extraordinary”, Michael Gannon says.

The Norwich City head of technical scouting and loan management is Kevin Thelwell’s son, and the hierarchy at Ibrox may be leaving themselves open to criticism.

Considering how important the head of recruitment role is at the Glaswegian outfit, the 26-year-old’s arrival couldn’t have come at a worse time, as fans in G51 want to see their new sporting director gone.

Speaking on Game On on 3 October, Gannon said: “No harm to Robbie, he’s been in the game for a while, but he’s 26 years old and he’s now going to be in charge of recruitment at Rangers. It’s pretty extraordinary.

“It’s such an important job. The whole recruitment model is built on buying and selling players and wheeling and dealing. That’s a big job for any 26-year-old. When you’re the sporting director’s son, there are red flags all over the shop.”

Gannon added: “He might be a good operator, but it’s left them wide open to criticism and accusations that they’re taking advantage of a naive owner.”

Kevin Thelwell has lost faith among Ibrox faithful

Thelwell senior knows what fans at Ibrox think about him, with supporters demanding answers from the sporting director after a poor start to the season.

The former Everton chief’s track record at the Gers hasn’t been encouraging, with Djeidi Gassama probably the only new signing who has worked out in G51.

Five most expensive transfers at the Gers in the summer

With the Englishman leading the Glaswegian outfit’s squad rebuild in the summer, the team seems to have regressed from last season.

Rangers should assess Thelwell’s position instead of appointing his son to a significant role at the club.

Supporters would like to see Cavenagh take some tough steps in the coming months, as it’s still early in the season to salvage it, but only time will tell whether the new American owners have the courage to make drastic calls at Ibrox.
