Russell Martin not fit for Rangers as Graham Potter claim emerges, risk of dressing room fallout
Russell Martin can’t continue at Rangers any longer after losing to Sturm Graz in the Europa League on Thursday.
Jurgen Saumel faced Martin at Merkur-Arena on 2 October, and the Austrian outfit got a 2-1 victory on the night to put further pressure on the Scottish manager.
Kevin Thelwell’s position at Ibrox has become tenuous, with fans calling for the new sporting director to take responsibility for the Gers’ performance so far in G51.
The former Everton chief undoubtedly must have played a key role in appointing the 39-year-old head coach at the Glaswegian outfit, but it looks like they made a massive mistake.

Russell Martin and Graham Potter wrong choice for Rangers and West Ham United
Martin doesn’t suit the Gers the same way Graham Potter didn’t suit West Ham United, Troy Deeney says.
The former English forward feels the Scottish manager may soon lose the dressing room at Ibrox as fans demand a change in the dugout.
Potter was recently sacked by the Hammers after consistently poor results and was replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo, who has changed the mood around the London Stadium, and the Glaswegian outfit should take note.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 3 October, Deeney said: “I think so [Martin is at risk of losing the dressing room]. And I don’t think it’s a great team. I don’t think that’s a great Rangers team. I don’t think there are great players in there that if you offered them out to everybody now, they would all be picked up at a level they probably think they should be.
“Where you are right now, they need to galvanise, get together, and a manager in this position needs to be pulling them all in. Potter didn’t suit West Ham, I don’t think Martin suits Rangers. It’s just what the fanbase requires. I don’t think he’s that person.”
Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises must sack Russell Martin immediately
Andrew Cavenagh has been reluctant to sack Martin at Ibrox, with the Gers’ hierarchy looking to support the manager during this tough spell.
While the American owners may have good intentions, there have been no signs of improvement from the Light Blues under the former Southampton head coach and persisting with him seems irresponsible.
The Glaswegian outfit are eighth in the William Hill Premiership and are winless in the league phase of the Europa League so far.
- Martin has a 31 per cent win rate at the Gers.
- The Light Blues are 32nd in the Europa League table.
- The Glaswegian outfit have conceded 23 goals in 16 matches this season.
Rangers can’t let Martin continue to break unwanted records, with the Gers now going 22 away games without a clean sheet for the first time in 128 years.
The Scottish manager also led the Light Blues to their worst league start in 47 years, and there can now be no excuses to keep him at the club any longer.
