Rangers ‘to lose money’ as reasons laid bare why manager does not trust £4.5m player

Rangers have been financially irresponsible in the transfer market over the years, and a previous deal will now come back to bite them.

Kevin Thelwell has been heavily criticised for his spending in the summer transfer window, with Rangers getting worse despite significant investment.

Rangers were reckless even before Russell Martin arrived to cause further problems, and they are still feeling the effects of poor transfers made under previous regimes.

Loans with obligations to buy have hurt Rangers badly in several cases, and they now look set to lose money on one such deal.

Oscar Cortes out in the cold at Sporting Gijon

Rangers signed Colombian wing-back Oscar Cortes last year, on loan with an obligation to buy at around £4.5 million.

Despite hardly featuring last season, Rangers were forced to buy Cortes permanently, and Martin had no intention of keeping him in the squad.

The permanent move was confirmed this summer, but Cortes headed out on loan to Spanish Segunda Division side Sporting Gijon, much to the disbelief of Ally McCoist.

Spanish outlet Killer Asturias has now reported that Cortes is out in the cold at Gijon, having played just 23 minutes across two games.

This is because manager Asier Garitano does not believe the Rangers loanee is in the right physical condition to be playing more, and Cortes has not earned the trust of his manager.

Rangers to lose money on Cortes

Had Cortes impressed out on loan, he could have returned to become part of the Rangers squad, or at least left for a respectable fee after a year of featuring regularly.

However, if Cortes’ struggles continue and he wastes another year not playing regularly, then Rangers will likely have to accept a huge loss to cut ties with the Colombian.

Cortes is one of several South American players who arrived for substantial fees and failed to settle, but Rangers did at least manage to sell Jefte, while the future of Jose Cifuentes remains unclear.
