David Tanner clarifies Rangers and Celtic remark that caused ‘great offence’

talkSPORT broadcaster David Tanner recently sparked controversy when he tweeted that the Scottish Premiership is a Europa League-level competition.

Rangers have had a catastrophic season so far, but not so long ago, they were challenging the best teams in the world in the Champions League.

Tanner has made negative comments surrounding the SPFL before, and Russell Martin’s Rangers won’t help any arguments.

Tanner’s comments caused a strong reaction among fans and re-ignited a debate on the standards of the SPFL, and he has now added to those comments.

David Tanner doubles down on Rangers and Celtic comment – ‘Conference level at best’

There’s no hiding away from the fact that Rangers have been a million miles away from their best this season.

Nico Raskin’s Rangers future is up in the air, as he is one of many stars for the Bears who just haven’t shown the form they once had since Martin‘s arrival.

Celtic have also been terrible this season, most recently losing 2-0 at home to Braga on Thursday, while slipping up a couple of times in the league.

Rangers lost 2-1 against Sturm Graz, which prompted Tanner to back up his previously damming comments involving the Gers.

I caused great offence recently when I said that the SPFL Premiership is a Europa League-level competition, miles from troubling the Champions League.

I was wrong. It’s maybe the Conference League at best. In the last eight days, the Old Firm have failed to beat four average teams.

Though the comments came with a sting, they arguably reflect the reality of Rangers’ current situation.

Russell Martin needs to go and Rangers need to rebuild

Quite simply, the only way Rangers season can be turned around is if Martin is replaced.

Rangers’ summer transfer window wasn’t good enough, and with January looming, Andrew Cavenagh has an important couple of months coming up.

Rangers need to cut their losses this January and re-invest wisely, as however hurtful Tanner’s comments are, they do speak the truth about Rangers right now.

Ibrox has become a toxic place to go, as the question presents itself – how much worse can it get?
