Steven Gerrard to Rangers return step closer after latest Ibrox announcement

Russell Martin’s future at Rangers is in a precarious position.

Rangers boss Martin faces calls to be sacked from supporters, who have been outraged by the start to this season.

The former Southampton manager has overseen Rangers‘ worst start to a league season for 47 years, whilst also crashing out of the Champions League playoffs in spectacular fashion.

Under-fire Rangers boss Martin continues to be publicly backed by Andrew Cavenagh, yet he is only a couple of poor results away from losing his job.

As fan mutiny continues to spread at Ibrox, Steven Gerrard could now be a step closer to making a spectacular return following a Rangers announcement.

Robbie Thelwell appointment could pave way for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers return

On 1 October, Kevin Thelwell’s son Robbie Thelwell was announced as Rangers’ new head of recruitment.

The news has been met with fury from Rangers fans who have already been extremely critical of Kevin Thelwell’s role at the club so far.

However, there could be a silver lining, as Gerrard may be lined up for a sensational return to G51 – even if many would never accept him back in the dugout given the circumstances of his exit.

Robbie Thelwell spent nearly three years working at Aston Villa, with eleven of those months overlapping with Gerrard’s managerial reign of the club.

Whilst Robbie Thelwell doesn’t have the final say in Martin’s future, he could certainly play a part in bringing Gerrard back to Govan.

Gerrard returning to Ibrox would be backed by many Rangers fans, who have become fed up with Martin’s possession-based philosophy.

Rangers must sack Russell Martin now if they can hire Gerrard

Martin enters a crucial period of his Rangers career, and he will need to secure six points from tough matches away to Sturm Graz and Falkirk.

However, if Gerrard is open to a return, Cavenagh must swallow his pride and sack the 39-year-old.

Gerrard and Martin’s managerial records

Whilst Martin has a much smaller sample size to judge from, Rangers’ performances this season have lacked inspiration and invention.

Martin has failed to get the best out of his squad, despite being hugely backed by Kevin Thelwell in the summer transfer window.

Gerrard clearly got the best out of his Gers players between 2018 and 2021, and it’s certain that his arrival could provide a dramatic uptick in form.
