Kris Boyd cannot hide disgust at Rangers in live reaction vs Sturm Graz – ‘Embarrassing’

Rangers once again crashed to defeat against Sturm Graz in a pathetic Europa League display on Thursday evening.

Jack Butland made a terrible error for the first goal, before Rangers were caught out by a set-piece in ridiculous fashion in the 2-1 defeat.

Rangers did have a few chances as Youssef Chermiti hit the bar, but they hit a new low defensively under Russell Martin, with Djeidi Gassama’s goal the only positive.

Martin’s side have already broken several defensive records as the manager continues to fail at Ibrox, and Rangers icon Kris Boyd could not believe what he saw on 2 October.

Kris Boyd embarrassed after Sturm Graz goal

Boyd could not believe what he saw during the first goal, with Butland’s failed stop just one of several errors in the phase of play which led to the shot.

A James Tavernier throw-in was intercepted, and both John Souttar and Derek Cornelius were caught out badly again before Tomi Horvat found the back of the net.

Speaking on Sky Sports News live on air after the goal, Boyd slammed the Rangers back line and hit out at their lack of focus.

“It’s embarrassing defending from Rangers. So wide open, but you’ve got to take care from the throw-in as well,” Boyd claimed.

Rangers woeful defensively under Russell Martin

Both first-half goals against Sturm Graz showed yet again why Martin needs to go, with defensive ineptitude a symptom of all the teams he has managed.

The second goal saw Martin’s high-line defence ripped apart with one pass, and while the players also deserve blame, it is his tactical setup that is at the heart of all these issues.

Souttar has struggled under Martin in a high line, and his individual performances, as well as part of a collective, have been woeful all season.

Rangers rank badly in the Scottish Premiership when it comes to conceding chances, and this is unlikely to change unless Martin leaves the club.
