Rangers given painful reminder after surprise Mohamed Salah scenes for Galatasaray vs Liverpool
Rangers have not won a Champions League game beyond the qualifying stages for a very long time.
The Gers played in the competition in 2021-22, ending a decade-long absence after winning the title, but Rangers suffered a complete humiliation in the group stages.
Rangers failed to reach this same stage under Russell Martin, with Rangers humiliated again by Club Brugge in the qualifying rounds.
This has meant that while Champions League matches such as Galatasaray vs Liverpool and PSG vs Barcelona will take place, Rangers are preparing for a trip to Sturm Graz in the Europa League instead.

Rangers reminded of humiliation as Mohamed Salah dropped for Liverpool
Liverpool thrashed Rangers 7-1 at Ibrox in the Gers’ last appearance in the group stages, in a truly dismal day.
- Scott Arfield gave Rangers the lead in the 17th minute, but it was downhill from there.
- Roberto Firmino levelled the score before half time, but they collapsed.
- Firmino scored again, before Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliott netted.
Salah netted a hat-trick which was a record-breaking one, as it came with the Egyptian winger starting on the bench.
It was a truely woeful night from Rangers as they were completely outclassed, and their late collapse saw Salah net three times in six minutes.

The attacker is rarely ever benched for Liverpool, but for their game away at Galatasaray, Arne Slot has put Salah on the bench, and this is the first time he has been left out of the starting XI in the Champions League since that match away at Rangers three years ago.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst swaps dugouts from Rangers humiliation
Giovanni van Bronckhorst was in charge of Rangers during that humiliation against Liverpool, but he has since swapped dugouts.
Van Bronckhorst led Rangers to the Europa League final in that season, but was eventually dismissed less than a year later, and has since stepped away from being a head coach.
The Dutchman is now part of Slot’s backroom staff at Liverpool, having joined in the summer, and while his last spell did not end well, many Rangers fans would have preferred Van Bronckhorst to return over Martin.
