Russell Martin called out after yet another excuse despite Rangers win vs Livingston

Russell Martin is doing himself no favours at Rangers right now.

Max Aarons’ stopping time strike ensured Rangers secured their first Scottish Premiership win of the season, with a 2-1 victory at Livingston on Sunday.

Oliver Antman stepped up on his return to the starting line-up, whilst Nico Raskin continued to show his class in the middle of the park.

Pressure continues to build on Martin despite the win, with fans calling for him to be sacked during the match versus Livingston, even after the late goal.

Russell Martin blames the pitch despite win vs Livingston

Speaking on the Daily Record Hotline Live on 28 September, Andy Newport has highlighted a key reason as to why Rangers fans are passionately against Martin.

He said: “He’s always got something to blame, and I think that’s what a lot of Rangers fans have taken an issue with.

“He’s not really stuck his hand up, and it’s always been excuses, whether it’s the players not feeling confident enough, the fixture list, or the off-field issues with transfers.

“He even mentioned the pitch today, but at the end of the day, he’s gotten away with a win.”

Martin has consistently failed to take accountability, yet the truth always lies in the team’s performance.

It’s no surprise that supporters want him gone, and despite Celtic undergoing their own struggles, the gap between the two will not be closed with Martin at the helm.

As his style of play continues to anger fans, it’s clear that Martin must improve his defensive tactics if he is to last in Govan.

Rangers must improve defensively under Russell Martin

Several performances this season have seen Rangers’ defence put in terrible displays.

The 6-0 second-leg loss in Brussels was horrific on all counts, yet against Genk and Livingston in the last week, those frailties are still being exposed.

John Souttar defended terribly for Mohamad Sylla’s goal, and the Scotland international needs to take responsibility for some of his performances this season.

Souttar essentially got a free pass from criticism whilst playing alongside a struggling Nasser Djiga, yet with Derek Cornelius now allowing him to play on his favoured side, he must be stronger.

He performed excellently for Scotland in the most recent international break, and now he must perform like that week in and week out for this out-of-sorts Rangers defence.
