Rangers star slammed despite win vs Livingston – ‘I don’t know what his strengths are’

Max Aarons netted a stoppage-time winner for Rangers as they survived a huge scare to beat Livingston 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Gers went ahead in the first half through James Tavernier, before a Mohamad Sylla header pegged them back in the 68th minute, prior to Aaron’s last-gasp intervention.

Russell Martin’s position at Rangers is still under constant scrutiny, and it had previously been suggested that he could have lost his job had his team failed to win at Almondvale.

The Govan outfit’s first Premiership win of the season will surely see the boss live to fight another day, but attention has instead been turned towards a Gers star whose performances are leaving a lot to be desired.

Thelo Aasgaard told he has to do more by Stephen Craigan

Thelo Aasgaard was an exciting signing for Rangers when they paid £3.5million to bring him in from Luton Town earlier in the summer.

The Norway international enjoyed the best goalscoring season of his career last time out, as he notched 12 goals for Wigan Athletic before moving up to the English Championship with Luton in January and adding a further two strikes to his tally.

However, the 23-year-old spent a large chunk of pre-season sidelined through injury, and that has seen him struggle badly for form in the early stages of the campaign.

Aasgaard is yet to notch his first goal contribution for Rangers, and has already made eight appearances in their colours.

His performance was below par yet again in the win over Livingston, as he failed to have a shot, or complete a key pass or successful dribble.

Aasgaard’s showing prompted criticism from Stephen Craigan on BBC Radio Scotland (28 September, 3:42pm), who suggested that he is yet to see where the attacker’s strengths lie.

“Aasgaard has got to find his form,” Craigan said.

“We still don’t know his position, don’t know what his strengths are. Does he have pace? Can he score goals? He just has to put it all together.”

Rangers are paying for Thelo Aasgaard gamble

It is hard to argue with the fact that Thelo Aasgaard’s signing was something of a gamble from Rangers, given the lack of experience that he has above the third tier in England.

The forward is clearly a player with a bright future, but it has already become clear that he isn’t ready to represent a club of the Gers’ stature, where performances and success are unconditional.

When you then throw in the fact that he has now been used in a central midfield role, a number 10 position, and as the leading striker, Aasgaard has hardly been given the opportunity to properly bed himself into the team.

Martin is obviously searching for a regular winning formula, and that has seen the complexion of his attack alter drastically on a week-to-week basis.

That has hindered Aasgaard’s ability to perform drastically so far, and it is clear that Rangers’ gamble to bring him in isn’t paying off at all so far.
