Agents in contact with Rangers over replacing Russell Martin amid ‘horrendous’ Ibrox scenes

Russell Martin was booed off the pitch away at Livingston on Sunday despite a 2-1 victory for Rangers.

Martin has come under a lot of scrutiny at Ibrox over the past few weeks as his Rangers side have struggled to perform.

Rangers picked up their first Scottish Premiership win of the season this weekend, but Martin was heckled by Rangers fans as they called for him to be sacked.

Martin joined the club in the summer, after leaving Southampton in December 2024, and has struggled to bring results with his unique style of football.

Russell Martin edges closer to sack

Martin was sacked by Southampton in December after a terrible start to his Premier League campaign, and has suffered the same fate here at Rangers.

Having a very specific style of football, it was always going to be hard for Martin to implement his style, but no one expected it to be this bad.

Rangers’ win at Livingston on Sunday has spared his blushes for now, with the hopes it brings more results and saves his job.

Rangers need to find their form with some results if Martin is to change his fortunes and win back the support of the fans.

However, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Derek Ferguson said he expects agents of other managers to already be in contact with the Gers amid the uncertainty.

“Whoever comes in, there’s only one way they’ll go and that’s upwards. It can’t get any worse. Whether it’s someone like Davide Ancelotti, Steven Gerrard, whoever, there’s only one way they can take this group from here,” he said.

“There’ll be a lot of agents looking after managers and will be making contact because this is a great opportunity.

“We’re at the lowest of the low in every aspect. I’ve never come across fans in the streets, inside the stadium, as low as they are right now. It’s a horrible feeling. It’s horrendous.”

Rangers players must step up

The players have not performed to the best of their abilities under Martin. £10million signing Youssef Chermiti is yet to prove his price tag, playing four games and yet to score.

Rangers captain James Tavernier has come under pressure despite scoring three of Rangers’ five league goals.

It took substitute loanee Max Aarons to come off the bench and score to win the game. And it is fair to say this one victory will not paper over the cracks.
