Russell Martin finally at ‘breaking point’ as Rangers sack latest drops ahead of Livingston

Russell Martin is under huge pressure after a woeful start to his managerial spell at Rangers.

Rangers have won just four of their 14 games in all competitions under Martin, who has faced the wrath of the angry fanbase as protests against him continue.

The Gers are winless in the Scottish Premiership ahead of their trip to Livingston on Sunday, and Rangers were also beaten by Genk in the Europa League.

A loss to Livingston would surely spell the end of Martin’s reign at Ibrox, but this was also the expectation before defeats to Hearts and Genk.

Russell Martin must beat Livingston

If Rangers are to accomplish anything this season, they will need to start winning immediately, and Martin simply must beat Livingston.

Rangers have broken unwanted defensive records as Martin’s side have struggled both at the back and going forward, and many believe that he needs to leave.

The atmosphere at Ibrox is now toxic, and the increasing number of empty seats could be decisive as Rangers ponder whether to sack Martin.

The Sunday Mail (page 69) have now reported in its print edition that Martin is surely at his last tether heading into the Livingston game.

The newspaper reports that pressure is said to be at “breaking point” on 28 September, despite more talks with Andrew Cavenagh in midweek.

Rangers must make statement against Livingston

With Celtic dropping points at home to Hibernian, Rangers have truly missed an opportunity to take advantage of their rivals’ crisis and sit top of the league.

Regardless of Martin’s future, the Rangers players must make a statement with a win at Livingston, in what promises to be tough conditions.

A win would see Rangers close the huge gap between themselves and Celtic to seven points, and while this is still a significant deficit, it is not impossible to close if Martin’s side can pick up form over the season, as unlikely as that seems.

Sacking Martin could end up galvanising the squad into picking up more points, but the Rangers board need to act soon as they run the risk of falling even further behind and leaving it too late to salvage the season.
