Rangers fans will not like Andrew Cavenagh whereabouts in Russell Martin sack twist

Rangers suffered yet another defeat on Thursday, this time to Genk in their first Europa League game of the season.

Pressure on Rangers head coach Russell Martin is at an all-time high following Thursday night’s 1-0 defeat at Ibrox.

Ten-man Rangers were defeated by Genk following Mohamed Diomande’s dismissal in the first half.

Next up for Rangers is Livingston in the Scottish Premiership, as it seems Martin will still be in a job, with Andrew Cavenagh‘s new whereabouts having been revealed.

Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh flies back to America

Scottish sports journalist Hugh Keevins has spoken on Clyde1 and provided an update that many Rangers fans probably didn’t want to hear.

“Andrew Cavenagh was in Scotland for a week,” he said. “It’s my understanding that he flew back to Philadelphia [on Friday]; however, he has had a week to be informed by his appointees – what is going on, on and off the park, the reaction of the fans.

“The fans want to know what he is going to do about it. You can’t have non-attendance, you can’t have four wins out of 14, and you can’t have a manager with an approval rating of zero.”

Cavenagh’s departure from Scotland likely means that Martin’s Rangers job is safe for the time being, in what fans will consider a real twist.

There’s clearly nothing Martin can do to turn the ship around, and Cavenagh – in attendance for the Gers’ past two home games – is either delaying the inevitable or simply has his priorities in the wrong place.

Russell Martins needs to be sacked before Rangers’ game vs Strum Graz

Rangers have enjoyed relative European joy in recent years, with the run to the Europa League final still fresh in fans’ memories.

With the club having only played once in the competition this year, there is still plenty of time to turn things around, but that will only happen once Martin is gone.

Russell Martin’s poor Rangers record

Rangers fans have protested against Martin as things have become really ugly around Ibrox, but only because Cavenagh has let it get to this stage.

So much time is left in the season, and Cavenagh and Co. can still do something about it, but with the chairman far from Ibrox, it remains uncertain how much longer Martin will remain.
