Mikey Moore following path of £35m player as difficult Rangers decision needed

Rangers thought they pulled off a coup when they signed Mikey Moore from Tottenham, but he is yet to impress at Ibrox.

Moore was targeted by several clubs before joining Rangers on loan, with the teenager regarded as Tottenham’s best young prospect.

The winger had already featured in Tottenham’s first team, and it was hoped that his loan at Rangers would see him thrive with regular game time.

However, with Rangers struggling under Russell Martin, Moore has been one of the poorest performers in recent weeks, and it is now becoming clear what the future holds for him.

The atmosphere around Rangers is toxic as a result of negativity directed at Martin and the club hierarchy, and it is a difficult place for players to thrive.

Despite this, Kevin Thelwell targeted younger prospects such as Youssef Chermiti and Jayden Meghoma in addition to Moore, and it has been questioned whether they can succeed in the pressure they are currently under.

Moore has been disappointing in most of his appearances, and the Tottenham loanee was particularly poor as Rangers lost to Genk.

A top prospect failing at Rangers is not new though. Fabio Silva was once Wolves’ record signing at £35 million before moving to Ibrox on loan, and he failed to make an impact at all. Silva is now at Borussia Dortmund.

Amad Diallo also struggled at Rangers, and is now a starter at Manchester United, and the same could happen to Moore: a difficult year at Ibrox is still likely to be followed up with the winger eventually developing into a top-class player.

Rangers need to drop Mikey Moore

With these struggles in mind, playing Moore despite his poor form feels futile. The best case for Rangers is that he picks up his form quickly, and carries the team to success over the course of the season.

This feels unlikely based on what Moore has contributed so far, and there only seems to be limited outcomes. Moore could continue to start, and eventually hold the team back if he fails to contribute, or he could improve, but leave at the end of the season anyway.

Rangers have their own players in Oliver Antman and Findlay Curtis waiting in the wings, and they could develop their own talents, rather than attempting to play a loanee into form when it is clear that he will leave Ibrox at the end of the season regardless of how he performs.
