Steven Thompson reacts to ‘unbelievable’ Ibrox moment in Rangers defeat vs Genk

Rangers fell to a 1-0 defeat to Genk in their opening Europa League game at Ibrox in controversial circumstances.

Russell Martin’s side were under pressure to beat an out-of-form Genk after a woeful start to their domestic campaign, but they failed to score at home yet again.

Rangers are winless in the Scottish Premiership and the Europa League, and there are growing calls for Martin to be dismissed.

The Gers were reduced to 10 men and also had a penalty denied against Genk, and there were several other ridiculous moments in what was a chaotic defeat.

Steven Thompson cannot believe John Souttar moment

John Souttar was one of Rangers’ poorest players on the night, with the centre-back caught out of position as former Celtic striker Oh Hyeon-gyu scored the only goal.

However, Souttar could have given Rangers the lead in the first half as he headed goalwards from a James Tavernier delivery, but he was denied by a simply sensational bit of defending.

Bryan Heynen pulled off a remarkable goal-line clearance to deny Souttar, and former Rangers star Steven Thompson could not believe what he saw.

“That’s unbelievable. I just can’t believe it,” Thompson stated in response to the goal-line intervention.

Rangers frustrate yet again as pressure grows on Russell Martin

Martin could point towards the goal-line clearance, as well as the contentious refereeing decisions, as excuses for the result, but the reality is that Rangers were still not good enough to win the game.

Rangers hardly tested the Genk goalkeeper, and they have now failed to score in four of their last five games.

Calls for Martin to be sacked are only intensifying, and there is little defence he can offer given the dismal results under his management.

Martin chose to drop Bojan Miovski in a bold call, which clearly backfired as Rangers did not offer enough threat in the box before or after the red card.
