Russell Martin shares new details of Andrew Cavenagh conversation as Rangers sack pressure grows

Rangers fans want Russell Martin to be dismissed from his role, but they may have to wait a while.

Martin has led Rangers to one of their worst-ever starts, and their Europa League defeat to Genk was the latest in a long line of miserable performances and results.

The Rangers board have backed Martin despite calls from fans and club legends to sack the underperforming manager.

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh was in attendance as Rangers lost to Genk at Ibrox, and Martin has now revealed what was discussed in a conversation with him after the game.

Russell Martin shuts down Andrew Cavenagh sack talk

Cavenagh’s presence at Ibrox has fuelled speculation that he could be prepared to pull the plug on Martin’s reign, but this does not appear to be the case.

A Rangers board meeting before the Genk defeat saw Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises continue backing Martin, and the American chairman spoke to the manager after the 1-0 loss.

Speaking to Sky Sports News on Friday, Martin dismissed any talk that Cavenagh could be prepared to sack him, and revealed what was said between the pair after the game.

“You guys love making out that everything is a big conversation about ‘is he going, is he staying?'” Martin stated.

“Generally, we just speak about the football club, what we can improve about the performance, and the next game.

“It’s never just me and Andrew; it’s also my staff, Patrick as well, and it was the same again last night.”

Russell Martin’s stubbornness over criticism making situation worse

Martin has refused to take any accountability at all for Rangers’ poor form, having hit out at the players and referee decisions his side have been subjected to.

Now, Martin has arrogantly rejected the idea that he could be under huge pressure, despite results turning the entire fanbase against him.

Martin’s terrible Rangers record

The manager has given irritable responses when asked why his tactics are not working, and also told reporters to focus on performances over results, when both have been dire.

If Martin does not believe he is at fault for anything regarding Rangers’ form, then the situation will only get worse if he does not implement a tactical change to get the best out of his squad.
