Russell Martin sack forced at Rangers as Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers to be hit in pocket

Rangers may regret backing Russell Martin to the hilt as pressure continued to mount at Ibrox.

The Scottish manager has led the Gers to their worst league start since 1978, rightfully leading to questions around his future in G51.

Despite calls for a change in the dugout, Andrew Cavenagh is fully behind Martin right now, with plans to back the former Southampton boss in a boardroom meeting.

Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart are also looking over their shoulder at Ibrox, and despite apparent calmness from the new American owners, things could potentially change quickly at the Glaswegian outfit.

Rangers fans can force Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers into Russell Martin sack

Supporters in G51 may be able to force Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises to relieve Martin of his duties at the Gers, Plumley says.

The finance expert has warned that with the prospect of fans boycotting matches at Ibrox, the US consortium could potentially feel the burden financially.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Plumley said: “It can be influenced by fans, and particularly if fans start voting with their feet. That’s not just to the detriment of the match-day experience and actually supporting the team to do well on the pitch, but it hits you in the pocket financially as well.

“Owners will never come out and say they’re being swayed by the fans or they’re doing it for that particular reason, but we absolutely know it has an impact, and it’s kind of conscious in the background all the time.

“There’s always a kind of point in time where enough is enough. So you can double down and say you back the manager, but ultimately that will change if performances on the pitch don’t turn around. Fans can have a voice in that as well.

“Of course, you don’t want fixtures being called off because it goes to that stage, but they’re absolutely there in the background, and they’re going to be at the forefront of owners’ minds.

“It will always come down to the on-pitch position, and if it carries on, then ultimately at some point you’ll end up changing that manager. It’s just the way it goes in football, isn’t it?”

Russell Martin has nowhere to hide at Ibrox

The Ibrox faithful have held protests against Martin and made their feelings about him known in no uncertain terms.

Rangers fans could also potentially turn on Cavenagh if the Scottish manager continues to fail after being backed by the boardroom.

The ex-Saints boss has nowhere to hide in G51 as supporters have been chanting for his dismissal for several weeks now.

Tensions are high at Ibrox, and it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds for Martin.
