Rangers player ratings vs Genk — Mohamed Diomande absurd as 8/10 heroic

Mohamed Diomande was sent off as Rangers lost 1-0 to Genk in the Europa League on Thursday.

Thorsten Fink’s team travelled to Ibrox on 25 September as Russell Martin opted for Youssef Chermiti in the starting lineup.

The Scottish manager has been under extreme pressure at the Gers after a poor start to the season, winning just four of the 13 matches before facing the Belgian outfit, and the midfielder’s tackle on Zakaria El Ouahdi in the 41st minute led to Matej Jug producing a red card.

Martin’s decision to take the team to Loch Lomond paid off against Hibernian in the Premier Sport Cup quarter-final on 20 September, but despite a promising first-half display, Oh Hyeon-gyu scored the only goal of the game.

Domande hasn’t been at his best under Martin this season, and the challenge was another mind-boggling decision from the midfielder this season.

With the Gers arguably in control of the first half, the Cote D’Ivoire international’s actions affected what could’ve been a positive result at Ibrox.

The 23-year-old was absurd to make that challenge and was rightfully shown his marching orders.

Diomande may not get as much criticism, though, as fans have set their sights on the Scottish manager to leave.

Jack Butland heroic in loss vs Genk at Ibrox

Jack Butland has arguably been the best player at Ibrox under the new management, pulling off some brilliant saves over the course of the campaign.

The England international saved Oh’s penalty just before the break to keep the Glaswegian outfit in the tie, and he subsequently was rock solid when facing multiple shots from the Genk forwards.

One could argue the scoreline at Ibrox could’ve been worse had the 32-year-old not been in between the sticks for the Light Blues as Martin fights for his future.

Butland has tried his best to help the 39-year-old head coach, but things haven’t gone his way.
