Andrew Cavenagh has ‘made decision’ on Russell Martin with new sack development

Russell Martin has started his managerial reign at Rangers in terrible fashion.

Martin is facing calls to be sacked by fans who are unhappy with the Bears’ start to the season.

Rangers sit 11th in the Scottish Premiership and have crashed out of the Champions League playoffs following a 9-1 loss to Club Brugge.

Rangers fan protests took place before the 2-0 win over Hibernian in the Premier Sports Cup, with Martin now focused on starting the Europa League with a win over Genk at Ibrox.

Andrew Cavenagh is faced with a huge decision, and he may have already made his official verdict on Martin’s future.

Andrew Cavenagh set to back Russell Martin regardless of Genk result

Martin is set to attend a board meeting ahead of the Genk match, with his future in jeopardy at Govan.

In the pre-match press conference ahead of their European tie, Martin said he enjoyed the pressure he is facing.

Speaking on the Daily Record Hotline Live on 22 September, chief football writer Keith Jackson believes that Cavenagh will back Martin in the long term, much to the annoyance of Gers fans.

He said: “The way Martin was speaking [in the press conference] lends more to the belief that he’s been told that no plug is going to get pulled.

“I think the board have made a decision on this, there’s going to be no knee-jerk reaction.

“They’ll go on a game-by-game basis, and I think there is a determination not to bow to the demands of the supporters.”

Rangers fans will clearly be upset by this, and they may direct their anger towards Cavenagh if Rangers were to lose their next two matches.

With Rangers heading to Livingston on Sunday, these next two games could be crucial in determining how Gers fans will view Martin in the future.

Martin’s record at Rangers

With the former Southampton manager possessing a terrible record in charge of the Bears, it is imperative that Rangers not only win their next two matches but also show signs of progress from their scrappy win over Hibs.

Cavenagh’s persistent show of faith in Martin could come back to bite him if developments in Govan continue to worsen.

Rangers supporters are understandably furious with the start to the season and Martin’s style of play.

It’s clear that the relationship between Martin and the Ibrox faithful is essentially non-existent, as many supporters were firmly against his appointment back in June.

As the gap with Celtic continues to get larger, it’s no wonder that fans are calling for a new manager, with Sean Dyche and Davide Ancelotti rumoured to be the frontrunners should Martin be relieved of his duties.

Cavenagh has stayed firm in his decision, with the next few weeks set to be a critical period that could define Rangers’ season.
