Ally McCoist: ‘There’s no excuse’ for what ex-Celtic player did at Ibrox

Rangers faced Genk in their opening Europa League fixture, and there were several significant moments in the first half alone.

Russell Martin’s side had an effort cleared off the line in a chaotic first half, which also saw Rangers go down to 10 men and give away a penalty.

Mohamed Diomande was handed a straight red card before James Tavernier gave away a penalty on the stroke of half time, in a game Rangers went on to lose 1-0 at Ibrox.

Prior to these incidents, Genk had a few chances as they carved Rangers open, but one of their players has now been slammed by Ally McCoist.

Ally McCoist slams Oh Hyeon-gyu after Rangers miss

South Korean striker Oh Hyeon-gyu departed Rangers’ Old Firm rivals Celtic last year to join Genk, after falling down the pecking order under Brendan Rodgers.

Oh started upfront for Genk at Ibrox, and was subjected to boos from the Rangers faithful, having made 47 appearances in two seasons for their bitter rivals.

Oh’s record against Rangers in Old Firm matches

Rangers conceded several big chances during the first half, and one of the biggest fell to the former Celtic striker, but he blazed a cross over the bar from short range.

Speaking on TNT Sports commentary, McCoist expressed his disbelief that the 24-year-old had not hit the back of the net.

“Oh has to score, there’s no excuse,” he stated.

“His positioning is unbelievable, there’s no challenge on the ball. He’s got to be hitting the target, that’s a let off.”

Oh Hyeon-gyu misses penalty against Rangers – but makes amends

Rangers had more reason to laugh at the former Celtic striker, as he then missed a penalty at the end of the first half.

Jack Butland pulled off a superb save to deny the striker from the spot, in a crucial moment as Rangers kept the scores level before the break.

It was a poor penalty from Oh, as he failed to hit it with convincing power or clever placement, while Butland should be commended for his save.

Oh did then have the last laugh, as after another miss in the second half, he netted to give Genk the lead, and celebrated passionately in front of the away end.
