Rangers set for another interim manager in Barry Ferguson return question

Barry Ferguson could potentially return to Rangers as interim manager amid uncertainty around Russell Martin.

As things stand, the Gers are 11th in the William Hill Premiership, with the former Southampton manager struggling to bring out the best in the team.

While Martin’s position under Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises seems to be secure for now, things could potentially change with even a draw in the upcoming matches.

Genk will travel to Ibrox next on 25 September in the Europa League, as the Scottish manager may be taking charge of his final games in G51.

Rangers to appoint interim manager as Russell Martin replacement not being assessed

Keith Jackson feels the Gers may be staring down the barrel of appointing an interim manager again, as a replacement for Martin isn’t on the agenda.

The Daily Record journalist believes that since the Light Blues aren’t engaging in conversations with prospective new head coaches, they may end up in a situation where a temporary appointment will have to be made at Ibrox.

While Ferguson took up the mantle after Phillipe Clement’s dismissal last season, it remains to be seen whether he will be willing to do the same this time around.

Ferguson’s record as the Gers’ interim manager

Speaking on Hotline Live on 23 September, the journalist said: “The official party line from Rangers is that they haven’t been speaking to any other managers, even though other managers have stepped forward and declared an interest in taking over from Martin.

“And if they’ve not been having these discussions and they did get to a point where they felt they were going to have to do something, then they might well be looking at an interim situation.

“Would Ferguson and his backroom team be willing to step back in there in an interim capacity, or would that be a bit difficult after everything they’ve gone through, and would they want the hassle of it? Who knows?”

Barry Ferguson would be welcomed back at Ibrox

Ferguson has been linked with a return to Ibrox, but this time on a permanent contract, after not being given an opportunity at the end of last season.

The former Scotland international achieved a few standout results during his short stint at the Gers, beating Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce over two legs in the Europa League.

While domestic form remained a concern for the Glaswegian outfit under the ex-interim head coach, their European run showed glimpses of what the likes of Billy Dodds, Neil McCann and Allan McGregor could’ve achieved in the dugout.

Rangers may soon have a difficult decision to make on Martin’s future, and Ferguson knows very well what it’s like to be in the Ibrox dugout.
