Rangers fans pick wrong target in Patrick Stewart as Russell Martin protests intensify

Rangers fans aren’t happy with Russell Martin and Patrick Stewart after a poor start to the season.

The Scottish manager wasn’t a popular choice among the supporters from the get-go, while the Gers’ CEO has been accused of mismanaging the situation in G51.

Martin’s future at Ibrox is uncertain, as the atmosphere and vitriol around the stadium could potentially become unbearable for the new owners soon.

Andrew Cavenagh may also want to reassess Stewart’s role at the Glaswegian outfit in the coming weeks, but there may be others in the boardroom who deserve more scrutiny.

Kevin Thelwell should be asked questions by Rangers fans

Kevin Thelwell has more explaining to do than Stewart at the Gers, Keith Jackson says.

The Daily Record journalist believes the Ibrox faithful may be directing their anger towards the wrong person in Stewart, as he may not have played a significant role in appointing Martin.

While Jackson admits that the responsibility for the Glaswegian outfit’s failures ultimately lies with the CEO, other members of the hierarchy should also be asked questions.

Martin’s record at the Gers

Speaking on Hotline Live on 23 September, the journalist said: “I’m looking at these protests, and Stewart is the guy who seems to be in the firing line. I wonder if the Rangers fans have picked the right target there. I’m not really convinced that Stewart was the man who was heading up the recruitment.

“I know he’s the CEO, therefore, the buck stops at his office. But if he was cut out of the loop of the recruitment process, which saw Martin appointed, then I think they’re aiming at the wrong man. I think Thelwell is a guy with more explaining to do. Albeit I do take the point that Stewart ultimately appointed Thelwell to the role.

“Whether or not he delegated responsibility to the sporting director for the appointment of a manager, which I think he did, it still brings his judgment into question if Thelwell has then taken up the mantle and picked or made a wrong choice.”

Ibrox recruitment strategy poor under Kevin Thelwell

Thelwell has also been at the receiving end of criticism from fans at Ibrox, and the former Everton chief may already know what the opinion about him is in G51 as the Gers go through a challenging phase.

The Light Blues’ new sporting director oversaw the addition of 12 new players, excluding Lyall Cameron, to the team in the previous transfer window, but it’s safe to say that Djeidi Gassama and Jayden Meghoma are the only ones who have impressed so far.

Youssef Chermiti’s transfer has put Thelwell in the spotlight, with the Portugal Under-21 international struggling at Goodison Park before completing a move worth £10million, including add-ons, to the Glaswegian outfit.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see fans continue to protest against the management if things don’t change, and more decision-makers may soon be in the firing line.
