Rangers boardroom meeting scheduled as Andrew Cavenagh makes Russell Martin decision

Rangers are set to face Belgian strugglers Genk in their opening Europa League match of the season.

Russell Martin’s side need to capitalise on Genk’s struggles, with the visitors also missing two key players ahead of their trip to Ibrox.

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh was in attendance as Rangers beat Hibernian, with pressure mounting on Martin amid protests calling for the manager to be sacked.

Cavenagh has now decided to stay in Glasgow to attend the match against Genk, and this will follow a Rangers boardroom meeting.

Rangers to back Russell Martin in boardroom meeting

Rangers fans have called for Martin and CEO Patrick Stewart to be removed from their roles, but they are unlikely to get their wish any time soon.

It has been reported by The Rangers Review that a board meeting will take place before the Genk match, and that Cavenagh will continue to back Martin in this meeting.

This was a pre-arranged meeting, rather than a newly organised one, but the timing is interesting given that it will be hours before more potential protests.

Martin is yet to win in the Scottish Premiership, and Rangers are in the Europa League after suffering a brutal humiliation in the Champions League play-offs.

Cavenagh will “reaffirm” his support of Martin, with the new Rangers chairman overseeing his appointment in the summer, and dropped points against Genk could turn the atmosphere even more toxic.

Andrew Cavenagh could lose support at Rangers

Given the investment Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises have made since completing their takeover of Rangers in the summer, the American owners have not received too much criticism from fans.

The anger has been directed at Martin, Stewart and Kevin Thelwell, two of whom were recruited by the ownership.

Their continued backing of Martin, who is deeply unpopular with fans, could eventually see fans direct their protests towards the owners.

If results do not improve and they stubbornly support their failing manager, it will become apparent that their priorities are not results.

Cavenagh must be ruthless when it comes to fixing Rangers, and sacking Martin would keep the owners onside with the fans.
