Russell Martin is ‘toast’ as Andrew Cavenagh verdict emerges at Rangers
Russell Martin remains in dangerous territory at Rangers as fans continue to call for his departure from Ibrox.
Martin was subject to heavy fan protests alongside Patrick Stewart ahead of Rangers’ 2-0 win against Hibernian at Ibrox on Saturday.
Andrew Cavenagh continues to support Martin despite the supporters’ fury towards how Rangers is being run.
Cavenagh became the chairman of Rangers in May, and it is unclear how he will react to the situation if Rangers were to lose their next match against Genk in the Europa League.

Andrew Cavenagh will continue to back Russell Martin
Speaking on the Daily Record Hotline Live on 22 September, Keith Jackson believes that Cavenagh might hold firm on his stance regarding Martin.
That is despite the perilous position he finds himself in.
Jackson said: “I think Martin’s toast because I don’t know how you win the supporters back from the position that he’s in.
“Cavenagh has a lot to learn; he has to learn quickly, and it will get worse before it gets better.
“We don’t know what makes Cavenagh tick; does he pride himself on having a duty of care for his employees?”
“If so, he might double down and back Martin against the fan protests.”
The Bears are winless and 11th in the Scottish Premiership table, and the recent win over Hibs in the Premier Sports Cup has not changed the supporters’ minds over Martin.
Hibs (h) | 2-0 Win |
Hearts (h) | 2-0 Loss |
Celtic (h) | 0-0 Draw |
Club Brugge (a) | 6-0 Loss |
St. Mirren (a) | 1-1 Draw |
Cavenagh’s lack of experience running a football club has Rangers fans feeling furious, with the Bears suffering their worst start to a league campaign in 47 years.
As seats at Ibrox become emptier each week, Cavenagh will have to sack Martin if the financial repercussions of the protests hold too much weight.
Russell Martin must be sacked if Rangers lose to Genk
Rangers take on Genk in their Europa League opener at Ibrox on Thursday, with a win necessary if Martin is to build any form of momentum at Ibrox.
The Belgian side sit third bottom in the Juliper Pro League and are yet to keep a clean sheet this season.
A loss at Ibrox would be inexcusable, and the toxicity surrounding Rangers would be ramped up once more.
Martin is lucky to have not been sacked already, but a defeat to Genk would surely spell the end of one of the worst managerial reigns in Rangers history.
