Russell Martin in position never seen before at Rangers as best comeback ever on cards

Russell Martin has a long way to go before fans begin to trust him at Rangers.

The Gers ended their five-game winless run in all competitions by beating Hibernian at Ibrox in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final on 20 September.

Martin has justified Andrew Cavenagh’s decision to back him for now, but a slip-up in the upcoming fixtures will undoubtedly put the pressure back on the Scottish manager.

The 39-year-old head coach finds himself in an untenable position at the Glaswegian outfit, and it will arguably require something special from him to keep his place in the G51 dugout.

Rangers fans have turned on Russell Martin in numbers

Roger Hannah hasn’t seen any Gers manager lose the fans as much as Martin has.

The Scottish journalist believes the former Southampton boss’ appointment at Ibrox has been controversial from the get-go, with things only getting worse since then.

Hannah feels that if the Scottish manager can turn things around at the Glaswegian outfit, it would be the best comeback ever from any head coach, given the position he finds himself in.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on 22 September, the journalist said: “I’m not sure I’ve seen Rangers manager lose the fans as much as this, full stop, let alone turn it around. He wasn’t a popular appointment. If you look at the results and performances so far, things have just started badly and gone downhill.

“So if he turns it around from the position he was in at half-past five on Saturday night, it’s not just the best comeback from a Rangers manager, it might be the best comeback from any manager.”

Andrew Cavenagh taking it game by game with Russell Martin

While Cavenagh has kept faith in Martin despite the poor start to the season, the toxic atmosphere could potentially play into his decision to sack him.

The American owners promised a brighter future for the Gers after completing their takeover in May, and considering the significant investment in the previous transfer window, the results have been unacceptable.

It appears that the US consortium want to trust the process set in motion by Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart, whose reputations are also on the line at the Light Blues.

Martin arguably can’t even draw a game at Rangers in the coming weeks as the pressure will be on him once again.

The Scottish manager has faced the ire of the supporters for several weeks now, and his dismissal feels inevitable.

Unless the ex-Saints boss pulls off something special at the Glaswegian outfit, it’s hard to see him continue in G51 for long.
