Rangers and Celtic developments ‘unusual’ as Old Firm in unprecedented crisis

Russell Martin and Brendan Rodgers are both facing difficulties at Rangers and Celtic, respectively.

The Scottish manager was appointed in the Gers’ dugout before the start of the 2025/26 season, but he’s failed to live up to expectations in G51.

Martin’s future at Ibrox is uncertain at the moment, after winning just four of his first 13 games in charge of the Light Blues.

Rodgers may not stay at Celtic much longer either, with the Northern Irishman clearly unhappy with the Hoops’ transfer strategy last summer, leading to unprecedented circumstances in Glasgow.

Celtic and Rangers fans’ simultaneous protests never seen before

Tam McManus has never seen both sets of Old Firm fans protesting against their respective clubs at the same time.

The former Hibernian ace described the current situation in Glasgow as “unusual”, with fans at Ibrox and Parkhead making their grievances known.

It isn’t surprising to see supporters from the Light Blues and the Hoops come out and raise concerns as their teams haven’t been at their best.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer on 22 September, McManus said: “It’s very unusual to see both clubs, both sets of supporters protesting. I’ve never seen that in all my time here. It’s usually one or the other.”

Andrew Cavenagh to face fan pressure at Ibrox soon

The Ibrox faithful have already targeted Kevin Thelwell with criticism following the Gers’ failures in recent months.

With the former Everton sporting director playing a key role in appointing Martin and the Light Blues’ recruitment strategy last summer, fans in G51 aren’t too pleased with what he’s done.

Andrew Cavenagh may also have a massive decision to make on Patrick Stewart, who supporters have called out alongside the Scottish manager recently.

Rangers can’t expect fans to be happy with the position they find themselves in, and someone needs to take control of the situation.

If the new American owners let Martin’s failures continue at the Gers, then it won’t be long before the Ibrox faithful potentially turn their anger towards Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.

It remains to be seen how the situation in G51 unfolds in the coming weeks as supporters crank the pressure on the boardroom.
