Cammy Bell shocked by Rangers ‘unthinkable’ as Russell Martin sack pressure remains

Russell Martin isn’t out of danger yet as Rangers got back to winning ways against Hibernian on Saturday.

David Gray’s team were left disappointed at Ibrox as the Gers won 2-0 with goals from Nicolas Raskin and Bojan Miovski in the first half.

While Andrew Cavenagh is backing Martin for now, fans still want to see him leave, despite his team making it to the semi-finals of the Premier Sports Cup.

The 39-year-old head coach has been unable to stamp his style of play at the Glaswegian outfit, but that arguably can’t continue if he wants to keep his job in G51.

Rangers league struggles baffle as Russell Martin needs winning run

Cammy Bell can’t believe the Gers are 11th in the table after five games in the William Hill Premiership.

The former goalkeeper has described the situation at Ibrox as “unthinkable”, with the Light Blues suffering their worst start to a league campaign since 1978.

Bell feels that if Martin needs a consistent run of positive results in the coming weeks to turn things around at the Glaswegian outfit, even a draw won’t be good enough.

Speaking via BBC Sport on 23 September, the former Scotland international said: “Martin needs to go on a really good run to turn this around. He’s got to win games. He’s got to go on a tremendous run. It’s going to take a period of consistent winning — he can’t even afford a draw.

“They’re 11th in the table, which is unthinkable. It’s a big ask, but the club have made a stand that they are backing him.”

Russell Martin on brink of sack at Ibrox

Martin’s sacking at Ibrox seems inevitable, considering there have been suggestions among many that he has “one game to save his job”.

With the Scottish manager’s situation at a point where any game could potentially be his last, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him be relieved of his duties sooner rather than later.

The former Southampton boss was supposed to stabilise the Glaswegian outfit under the new ownership, but instead, there has been further upheaval.

Rangers fans protested against Martin before kick-off in the win over Hibernian, highlighting the bitter predicament he’s in.

It will undoubtedly take something special in the coming months, like a massive unbeaten streak, for the Scottish manager to possibly guarantee his future in G51.

The ex-Saints boss’ situation is certainly one to keep an eye on as the Gers start their Europa League campaign against Genk on 25 September.
