Russell Martin told of ‘exceptional’ feat needed to avoid Rangers sack

Russell Martin is still looking over his shoulder as Rangers beat Hibernian 2-0 in the Premier Sports Cup on Saturday.

Ibrox hosted David Gray’s team on 20 September in the quarter-finals of the cup competition, with Nicolas Raskin and Bojan Miovski’s goals sealing the win for the Gers.

Andrew Cavenagh has a massive decision to make regarding Martin, as one win certainly won’t convince fans that the Scottish manager is the right person to lead the Light Blues.

The former Southampton head coach has been on the receiving end of extreme criticism and vitriol from the supporters in G51, and a way back seems almost impossible for him at the Glaswegian outfit.

Rangers winning run could save Russell Martin from sack

Only a “legendary” win streak at the Gers will get Martin back in the fans’ good graces, Gary Keown says.

The Daily Mail journalist believes the Scottish manager needs to do something “exceptional” at Ibrox for supporters to even tolerate him in G51.

Keown feels there’s been nothing at the Glaswegian outfit this season to suggest that the ex-Saints boss can achieve something special in the coming months.

The journalist wrote in the Daily Mail on 21 September: “It’s going to take something exceptional, an unbeaten run of legendary proportions, for Martin to even be tolerated by the fanbase, and there’s still no convincing evidence to suggest that he or his squad are remotely capable of that. Hard-earned win over a disappointing Hibs under the belt or not.”

Russell Martin out of his depth at Ibrox

Martin has become villain number one at Ibrox after leading the Gers to their worst league start since 1978.

The Light Blues haven’t won any of their opening five matches in the William Hill Premiership, leading to loud calls for his dismissal from the terraces.

While beating Hibs may have temporarily spared the Scottish manager from being sacked, the prospect could still be on the table.

Martin’s record at the Gers

Rangers supporters protested against Martin before kick-off against Hibernian, making their feelings clear about him.

With a large section of the Ibrox faithful turning against the Scottish manager and Patrick Stewart, there seems to be no way back for the 39-year-old head coach at the Gers.

It will be interesting to see how the situation unfolds in G51, but another draw or loss could potentially see the former Southampton boss staring down the barrel once again.
