Russell Martin still in serious trouble at Rangers after what Andrew Cavenagh did
Russell Martin isn’t out of the woods yet despite Rangers beating Hibernian in the Premier Sports Cup on Saturday.
Nicolas Raskin’s goalscoring return at Ibrox saw the Gers win 2-0 against Hibs, booking their place in the semi-finals of the competition, where they will face Celtic.
Andrew Cavenagh has backed Martin as supporters in G51 have been calling for his sacking for several weeks now.
While beating David Gray’s team will certainly give the Scottish manager some respite for the time being, he may still have concerns at the Glaswegian outfit.

Andrew Cavenagh present at Ibrox as Rangers beat Hibernian
Cavenagh’s presence in the stands as the Gers beat Hibernian shows the “seriousness” of the situation, Andrew Newport says.
The Daily Record journalist believes that the chairman’s seemingly forced visit to Ibrox to appease fans suggests that all is not well in G51.
With Martin quietening the noise around his future at the Light Blues for now, there’s still a heavy atmosphere around the Glaswegian outfit.
Newport wrote in the Daily Record on 22 September: “It seems that Cavenagh is sticking by Martin for now. But the fact he was forced to hop on Bear Force One and jet across the Atlantic to offer the furious punters a visible sign that he has taken a hold of the club’s growing crisis only illustrates the seriousness of the situation Martin still finds himself in.”

Russell Martin sack inevitable at Ibrox
Martin has reached a point at Ibrox where he must win every game, and it will arguably take a gigantic feat from here on out for him to avoid getting sacked.
After the Gers suffered their joint-worst European defeat against Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off, travelling supporters at the Jan Breydel Stadium called for the Scottish manager’s dismissal.
The away supporters are the most loyal and ardent, and their opinions undoubtedly carry a lot of weight.
- The Gers are winless in the William Hill Premiership.
- The Light Blues sit 10th in the league table.
- The Glaswegian outfit could potentially be at the bottom of the table before their next league game.
Rangers have already gotten candidates for Martin’s successor, but it remains to be seen how long he will survive at Ibrox.
The Gers have a run of domestic fixtures coming up that they should win on paper, and dropping further points in the league will make matters worse for the former Southampton boss.
It only feels like a matter of time before Martin is relieved of his duties, but only time will tell when that will happen.
