Chris Sutton blasts Rangers and Celtic as Premier Sports Cup tie confirmed
Rangers will face Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final after beating Hibernian on Saturday.
David Gray’s team travelled to Ibrox on 20 September, but faced disappointment as the hosts got a comfortable 2-0 victory in the end.
Celtic also did the business against Partick Thistle, beating the William Hill Championship side 4-0 at the Firhill Stadium on 21 September, setting up another Old Firm derby in the cup competition this season.
While Andrew Cavenagh and Co. are backing Martin, it still remains to be seen whether he will be in charge in G51 before the semi-final tie on 1 November.

Rangers draw vs Celtic this season worst ever Old Firm derby
Chris Sutton termed the Old Firm derby on 31 August that ended in a 0-0 draw the worst he’s ever seen.
Nonetheless, the ex-Celtic forward is looking forward to seeing the Gers take on the Hoops at Hampden Park in what’s certainly a tough fixture to predict.
Martin may have an opportunity to lift his first trophy at Ibrox if he manages to keep his job in the coming months, but it’s still a massive opportunity for the Light Blues even if the Scottish manager is sacked before then.
Speaking on BBC’s 606 Football Phone In on 21 September, Sutton said: “Celtic won fairly easily against Partick Thistle, and Martin’s men beat Hibs. Big win. That’s a great game. Hard to call these games. Drew 0-0 in the worst Glasgow derby game I’ve seen ever, I think, earlier on this season. But means a lot that first trophy.”
Ibrox faithful will be confident after recent Old Firm record
Martin has some massive tests at Ibrox in the coming weeks, with the likes of Genk, Dundee United and Kilmarnock travelling to G51 before the Old Firm derby.
The former Southampton boss isn’t guaranteed to be in the dugout before the clash at Hampden Park, and another loss or draw in the coming weeks will put the pressure right back on him.
Beating Hibernian has handed the Scottish manager some more time in G51, but the upcoming results will undoubtedly dictate how his future unfolds at Ibrox.
Game vs Celtic | Result |
1 February 2025 | 3-0 win |
16 March 2025 | 3-2 win |
4 May 2025 | 1-1 draw |
31 August 2025 | 0-0 draw |
Rangers fans haven’t been ambiguous about their opinions on Martin, with chants for his dismissal loud before kick-off against Hibs.
In no uncertain terms, the Ibrox faithful have made their feelings known about the ex-Saints boss, and all eyes are now on the Gers’ hierarchy to do what needs to be done.
With prospects in the William Hill Premiership looking bleak, the Light Blues should do everything in their power to win the Premier Sports Cup.
